God’s Faithfulness in Times of Loss | Finding Comfort in Grief

Loss comes in many forms—not just the death of a loved one, but the loss of relationships, health, dreams, or stability. I remember a time when loss came like a wave I didn’t see coming. One moment, life was “normal,” and the next, everything was different.

What caught me off guard even more than the grief was how empty everything suddenly felt. Even places that once brought joy seemed quieter, as if life had lost its color. And though people meant well, no words seemed to comfort. I didn’t want clichés. I wanted to know God was near—even in this.

Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”

Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
“It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”

Grief has a way of making everything feel unfamiliar. But Psalm 34:18 gives us something steady to hold on to: “The Lord is nigh…” God isn’t far off, watching our pain from a distance. He draws close.

When we feel broken beyond repair, God meets us right in that place. He doesn’t wait for us to “pull it together.” He moves toward us in our mourning.

Lamentations reminds us that even when everything feels like it’s falling apart, God's mercies are new every morning. That means even in the fog of grief, God’s faithfulness hasn’t stopped. It shows up in daily strength, in a kind word, in a moment of peace when we least expect it. Loss doesn’t cancel His love—it draws us deeper into it.

If you're walking through loss, don’t pressure yourself to have all the answers or to feel “better” by a certain time. Grief is not linear, and it doesn't look the same for everyone.

But here’s what is always true: God is with you in it.

Let yourself weep. Let yourself remember. And let yourself lean on the One who understands every kind of sorrow. Talk to Him honestly. Let His Word speak comfort over you.
And if the loss is still fresh, don’t feel guilty for laughing again or smiling—it doesn’t mean you’ve forgotten; it means healing is working.

A Prayer For Today

Lord, You know the ache of loss, and You understand our sorrow. Thank You for being near when our hearts are broken. Comfort us with Your presence. Help us trust that even in this, You are faithful. Heal the places in us that feel empty, and give us hope for the days ahead. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
