In the Potter's Hands
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture
Jeremiah 18:6 (KJV)
“O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the Lord. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.”
Reflection
I have always enjoyed creative outlets. Arts, crafts, painting, drawing, and building things with my hands have always fascinated me. One memory that has stayed with me over the years comes from an art class I took in eighth grade.
Looking back on that project now, I realize that if I were making the same dish today, I would probably do things differently.
During one lesson, we learned about pottery. We were given clay and allowed to create whatever we wanted. I decided to make a small dish with a raised rim around the edge. Carefully, I rolled little ropes of clay, attached them together, and smoothed everything out. I loved every step of the process.
When it was finished, the teacher fired it in the kiln, and I glazed it myself. I was excited to see the finished result. Unfortunately, what emerged was a lopsided mess. It certainly was not perfect, but it was mine. Proudly, I carried it home and gave it to my mother, who graciously put it to use.
Looking back on that project now, I realize that if I were making the same dish today, I would probably do things differently. The moment I noticed it becoming uneven, I would likely press the clay back down, reshape it, and start again. Not because I hated the clay, but because I had something better in mind for it.
Shaped According to His Design
As I thought about that memory, Jeremiah 18 came to mind. God compares Himself to a potter and His people to clay. The image is simple, yet incredibly powerful. The clay does not determine what it will become. It does not decide its purpose or shape. Those decisions belong to the potter.
If a potter notices a flaw while working the clay, he has every right to rework it. The clay belongs to him. He is not destroying it. He is shaping it according to his design.
Sometimes I forget that this is true of my own life.
Trusting Through the Reshaping
When things do not go the way I planned, I become frustrated. When doors close, prayers seem delayed, or circumstances become difficult, I find myself questioning what God is doing. Like Israel in the wilderness, it is easy to focus on what has been lost instead of trusting the One who is leading the journey.
The Israelites repeatedly wanted to do things their own way. They complained, resisted God's direction, and longed for what they had left behind. Yet God did not abandon His people. Again and again, He corrected them, disciplined them, and called them back to Himself. He broke down what needed to be broken and rebuilt what needed to be rebuilt.
The remarkable thing is that He did not cast them aside.
Held Securely by the Creator
That same truth encourages me today. There are times when God allows circumstances that reshape my plans, challenge my attitudes, and expose areas that still need His work. In those moments, it can feel uncomfortable. Yet the Potter has not abandoned the clay. He is still working.
The beautiful promise for believers is that we belong to Him. Jesus said in John 10:28 that no one can pluck His sheep out of His hand. The hands that shape us are the same hands that hold us securely.
What comfort there is in knowing that our lives are not left to chance. Every breath, every opportunity, every lesson, and every trial passes through the hands of a loving Creator who knows exactly what He is doing. Even when we cannot see the finished design, He can.
Conformed to Christ
Romans 8:29 reminds us that God's purpose is to conform us to the image of His Son. The Potter is not simply making us more comfortable. He is making us more like Christ. Every correction, every lesson, and every season of growth is part of that work.
As I look back over my life, I can see places where God reshaped what I would have left alone. At the time, I did not understand why. Today, I am thankful He loved me enough not to leave me as I was.
Even when we cannot see the finished design, He can.
The Potter is not simply making us more comfortable. He is making us more like Christ.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for being a patient and loving Potter. Forgive me for the times I resist Your work or question Your plans. Help me to trust that You know exactly what You are doing, even when I cannot see the finished design. Give me a heart that is willing to be shaped by Your hands and conformed to the image of Christ. Thank You that I belong to You and that nothing can separate me from Your care. In Jesus' name, amen.
Before You Go
The clay never sees the finished piece while it is being shaped. It only experiences the pressure of the potter's hands. Yet every movement has a purpose.
If you are walking through a season that feels confusing or difficult, remember that God has not set you aside. He has not forgotten you, and He has not abandoned His work in your life. The same hands that are shaping you are also holding you securely.
You may not understand every turn in the process, but you can trust the Potter. He is creating something far more beautiful than you can currently see, and He never abandons the work of His hands.
