A Hunger That Can Only Be Filled

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

God is the One who satisfies the hunger He places within the soul.

The Scripture

Matthew 5:6 (KJV)

“Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Reflection

Most of us know what it feels like to be hungry. Our stomach begins to growl, our energy drops, and all we can think about is finding something to eat. Hunger has a way of demanding our attention. It reminds us that our bodies need something they cannot provide for themselves.

Hunger has a way of demanding our attention. It reminds us that our bodies need something they cannot provide for themselves.

One thing I have experienced is feeling hungry even after eating. There have been times when I was so sleep deprived that the hunger pains remained, even after a meal. My stomach still felt empty, and the familiar growling continued. It was a strange reminder that our bodies can experience a longing that isn't easily ignored.

As I read Jesus' words in Matthew 5:6, that experience came to mind. A truly hungry person is consumed with one thought: I need to be filled. Hunger affects how they think, how they feel, and how they function. Everything else becomes secondary until that need is satisfied.

A Longing for Righteousness

Jesus says we are blessed when we hunger and thirst after righteousness.

Notice He does not describe a casual interest or an occasional desire. He speaks of a longing that is as real as physical hunger. Just as our bodies crave food, our hearts should long for the righteousness that only God provides through Jesus Christ.

That kind of hunger is not a weakness. It is evidence that God is drawing us to Himself.

"Just as your body was designed to crave nourishment, your soul was created to find its satisfaction in God."

Satisfied in Christ

Before Christ, we could never satisfy that longing on our own. No amount of good works, religious effort, or personal achievement could make us righteous before God. Our greatest need was not simply to become better people. Our greatest need was to be reconciled to God through His Son.

That is exactly what Jesus accomplished. Through His death and resurrection, Christ provides the righteousness we could never earn. When we place our faith in Him, we are made right with God, and from that new life grows a continual desire to know Him more. We begin to hunger for His Word, His presence, His truth, and the life He calls us to live.

God does not leave that hunger unanswered. Psalm 107:9 says, "For he satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness." What a beautiful promise. The One who creates the hunger is also the One who satisfies it.

A Gift of Grace

The more we know Christ, the more we discover there is still more to know. Our hunger does not disappear because we have found Him. Instead, it grows into a deeper desire to walk with Him, understand His Word, and become more like Him. God continues filling the hearts of those who continually seek Him.

Perhaps that is why Jesus calls these people blessed. Hunger is often viewed as something unpleasant, something we want to get rid of as quickly as possible. Yet spiritual hunger is a gift. It reminds us that our satisfaction is not found in this world but in the One who alone can fill the deepest needs of our hearts.

Our hunger does not disappear because we have found Him.
It grows into a deeper desire to walk with Him.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for creating in me a hunger that only You can satisfy. Help me never to become content with the temporary things of this world when You offer something infinitely greater. Increase my desire for Your Word, Your truth, and Your presence. Thank You for providing the righteousness I could never earn through Jesus Christ. Continue filling my heart with Your goodness as I seek You each day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

The next time your stomach reminds you that it needs food, let it become a reminder of something even greater. Just as your body was designed to crave nourishment, your soul was created to find its satisfaction in God.

Do not view spiritual hunger as something lacking. View it as evidence that God is continuing His work within you. Those who hunger and thirst after righteousness are not left empty. Jesus has promised that they will be filled, and every promise He makes is trustworthy.
