The Amazing Connection Between Giving and Thanksgiving to God

Thankfulness Devotional

[2Co 9:11 NLT] 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that you can always be generous. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will thank God.

One of the most cherished aspects of our Christian journey is the act of giving. In today’s churches, giving is at the heart of many ministries. Whether your congregation runs a soup kitchen, a food bank, or supports missionaries, the act of giving is more than just charity—it’s a deep, spiritual expression of thanksgiving to God.

A lot of what we’ve been taught about giving is true. When we give with the right heart, there’s a reward—not always material, but a joy and peace that fills the soul. But here's something I've come to realize in my own life: giving doesn’t just reflect gratitude. It fuels it. It multiplies thanksgiving in ways we don’t always expect.

There was a time when I found myself in real need. It was one of those seasons where I didn’t even want to say out loud what I was going through. So I kept it between me and God. I poured out my heart to Him in prayer. And then, out of nowhere, someone stepped in with a gift that met my need. I hadn't said a word to them—but God knew. The thankfulness that welled up inside me was overwhelming. I cried. I rejoiced. And I praised God like I hadn’t in a long time. That moment taught me something: someone else's giving stirred up deep thanksgiving in my soul—and gave God the glory.

That's the amazing connection. When we give, we’re not just helping someone—we’re inviting them into a moment of thanksgiving that lifts their eyes to heaven. Paul speaks about this in 2 Corinthians 9. When we give generously, others respond by giving thanks to God. It becomes a chain reaction of praise and gratitude.

Yes, the giver is blessed. But the real beauty is in how giving multiplies glory to God. What a gift—to be a part of someone else’s worship just because we chose to give.

Let’s be people who give with that in mind. Not just out of duty, but out of love. Not just to check a box, but to spark praise in someone else’s heart. Because when we give with the right heart, thanksgiving overflows—ours and theirs.

A Prayer of Gratitude and Generosity

Heavenly Father,
We are profoundly grateful for the countless blessings You bestow upon us.
Lord, help us to bring glory to Your name through our generosity toward those in need.
May our thanksgiving to You multiply endlessly as we mirror Your love to others.
In the name of our beloved Savior, Christ Jesus,
Amen.

Before You Go

Has someone’s giving ever brought you to tears of thanksgiving? Maybe today is your chance to be that vessel for someone else. Let your giving be more than an action—let it be an offering of worship that sparks praise in the lives of others.
