The Gift of Intercessory Prayer: Why It Matters & How to Start

I remember a season where my own prayer list was three pages long and every single line started with "I need." I felt so heavy. It wasn't until a friend called just to say they were praying for ME that the weight finally lifted. That moment shifted my entire perspective on what it means to be a gift-giver. Today, I want to share how you can offer that same relief to others through the gift of intercessory prayer.

Why Even the Strongest Need the Gift of Prayer

There is one person who truly understood how valuable intercessory prayer is, and that is the Apostle Paul. He was someone who had faced an incredible amount of suffering and persecution throughout his ministry. He knew what it was to be shipwrecked, beaten, and imprisoned. Yet, on this one specific occasion in Asia, the pressure on Paul and Timothy was so intense that they did not know if they were going to make it through.

They reached the very end of their own strength. They were overextended. When Paul wrote his letter back to the church at Corinth, he didn't focus on his own grit or his own survival skills. Instead, he expressed just how much their specific gift of prayer had helped them survive the fire. He didn't see their prayers as a small gesture; he saw them as a vital resource that changed the outcome of their situation.

"Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf."

— 2 Corinthians 1:11

Paul understood that he wasn’t just asking for a small favor. He recognized that their collective intercessory prayer was a tangible spiritual resource. Even though he was an Apostle with a deep prayer life of his own, he knew he couldn't do it alone. He needed the body of Christ to work together on his behalf.

3 Reasons to Give the Gift of Prayer

When we look at the life of Jesus and the writings of the Apostle Paul, we see a clear pattern for how we are to support one another. Here is why the gift of intercessory prayer is so vital for our lives today.

1. It Encourages a Spirit of Love

Praying for others frees us from a selfish mindset. It is so easy to get caught up in our own desires and requirements. I have found that I cannot truly love someone if I do not care enough to carry their needs to the Father. Bearing one another's burdens is a direct show of love because it fulfills the law of Christ.

In this way, we follow in the footsteps of Jesus. He instructs us to pray not just for the people we love, but also for those who disturb or frustrate us. When we pray for others, we participate in a ministry of reconciliation. We are asking God to move in their lives just as He has moved in ours.

Reflections: Galatians 6:1, Matthew 5:44, 2 Corinthians 5:18

2. It Knits the Body of Christ Together

Praying for others allows us to strive together as a community. It is the spiritual glue that connects us. When we share in one another's concerns, we grow together in accomplishing God's Will. We are reminded that in our walk with God, we are never truly alone.

We are all members of Christ’s body. This means we should mourn together, celebrate together, and endure together. When we band together for a common goal in prayer, we share in the hope of God. It turns a group of individuals into a united family.

Reflections: Romans 15:30, 1 Corinthians 12:30, Philippians 1:27

3. It Yields Real Results

The Apostle Paul asked his readers to pray for him numerous times because he recognized the power of believers praying in unity. He knew that prayer wasn't just a nice thought. It is an effective tool. In Ephesians 6, immediately after describing the Armor of God, he advises us to pray for all the saints.

It is here that we must rely on God's power and grace rather than our own. We know He is the only source of true power. Because of His Spirit, we are able to aid others in ways that are physically impossible for us. Intercessory prayer is an excellent instrument for strengthening the body of Christ.

Reflections: James 5:16-18, Colossians 4:3-4, Philippians 1:19

"I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them."

1 Timothy 2:1 (NLT)

Common Questions About Intercessory Prayer

How do I pray for others when I have no words left for myself?

There are seasons when we feel so drained that even a simple prayer feels like a mountain to climb. In those moments, remember that intercession does not require a long speech. You can simply hold a person’s name before the Father. The Holy Spirit understands the groans of our hearts when we are too weary to speak.

Is the gift of intercessory prayer only for spiritual giants?

Not at all. The Apostle Paul was a leader, but he relied on the prayers of everyday believers in Corinth to sustain him. This gift is available to every child of God. t is not about the eloquence of your words, but the willingness of your heart to pray through for someone else.

What if I feel guilty focusing on others when my own life is a mess?

It is natural to feel that way, but I have found that praying for others is actually a remedy for a heavy heart. When we shift our focus from "I need" to "how can I help," it breaks the cycle of anxiety. It reminds us that we are part of a larger body. As we pour out into others, God is more than capable of pouring back into us.

The Power of the Unspoken Gift

The most profound gift we can give is often for the "unspoken" need. We all know someone carrying a burden they cannot yet put into words. When we pray for those silent struggles, we are offering a ministry of support that requires no recognition. This week, I encourage you to ask the Father to bring someone to your mind who needs that quiet encouragement.
