Words That Reflect Wisdom

Recently I listened as two believers in Jesus began discussing Scripture. At first, it was simply a conversation. They didn't agree on every point, but there was an opportunity to learn from one another and search the Scriptures together.

There have been times when my own pride has spoken before wisdom had a chance.

Then something changed. Before long, the discussion became personal. Calm words turned into accusations. Accusations became name-calling. Eventually, threats were exchanged, and what had begun as a conversation about God's Word no longer reflected the God whose Word they were discussing.

Afterward, I couldn't stop thinking about it. How could something that began with Scripture end in such a painful way? Then the Lord gently reminded me that I wasn't merely observing someone else's struggle. There have been moments when my emotions wanted to control my tongue instead of allowing God's Spirit to guide my words.

That is exactly why Proverbs tells us: "In the mouth of the foolish is a rod of pride: but the lips of the wise shall preserve them." What a vivid picture.

The Danger of Careless Words

Pride often announces itself through our words. It boasts. It exaggerates. It lashes out. It seeks to wound. It insists on having the last word. When pride governs the heart, the tongue soon follows.

James reminds us that the tongue, though small, can cause enormous destruction. Like a tiny spark that ignites an entire forest, careless words can damage relationships, divide churches, and leave wounds that linger long after the conversation has ended. But Proverbs also gives us hope: "The lips of the wise shall preserve them."

A Heart Shaped by Grace

The wise know when to speak and when to remain silent. They answer with gentleness instead of harshness. They seek peace instead of victory. Their desire is not to win an argument but to honor Christ. This kind of wisdom is not something we produce by sheer determination. It is the work of the Holy Spirit within us.

As we walk with Christ, He transforms our hearts, and what fills our hearts eventually shapes our words. The same Savior who redeemed us is also teaching us to speak with grace, truth, humility, and love. Jesus is our perfect example. He was insulted, misunderstood, falsely accused, and rejected. Yet His words always reflected the wisdom and holiness of His Father. Even when He spoke with firmness, His speech was never driven by sinful pride. Every word He spoke accomplished the Father's will.

In a world where harsh words seem to grow louder every day, may our speech point people to Christ instead of ourselves. Whether we are discussing Scripture, responding to criticism, or facing disagreement, let our words be seasoned with humility and guided by the wisdom that comes from above.

Before You Go

You cannot control the words other people choose to speak. But by God's grace, you can choose how you will respond. The next time you face disagreement or harsh words, pause before you answer. Ask the Lord to let your speech reflect the wisdom of Christ rather than the pride of the flesh.
