More Than a Routine
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture
Hebrews 10:5 (KJV)
“Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:”
Reflection
There are so many wonderful things about gathering with God's people on Sunday. We lift our voices in worship, spend time in prayer, hear the preaching of God's Word, and enjoy the fellowship of other believers. These are precious gifts that encourage our hearts and strengthen our faith.
But if we are not careful, even good routines can quietly become empty.
Those moments don't have to end when we leave the church building either. Many of us have daily routines that help us grow spiritually. I know my mornings usually begin with reading the Scriptures and spending time in prayer before the day gets busy. Over time, these habits become an important part of our walk with the Lord.
We may begin to think that simply going through the motions is what pleases God. We check off our Bible reading, finish our prayers, attend church faithfully, and somehow feel that we have done enough. While these practices are wonderful and necessary for spiritual growth, they were never meant to replace the heart of our relationship with God.
Hebrews reminds us that sacrifices and offerings were never God's ultimate solution for sin. Those sacrifices pointed to Someone greater. When Jesus came into the world, He fulfilled what every sacrifice had been pointing toward. The body prepared for Him was offered once for all upon the cross. Unlike the repeated sacrifices of the Old Testament, Christ's sacrifice completely satisfied God's righteous judgment against sin.
A Matter of the Heart
That is why David could write in Psalm 51 that God desired more than sacrifice. The Lord has always been after the heart. No amount of religious activity can cleanse a guilty conscience. No routine, no matter how faithful, can remove our sin or make us righteous before God. Only Jesus Christ can do that.
Joyful Opportunities
What a freeing truth. I do not read my Bible each morning to earn God's love. I do not pray because I hope it will somehow make Him accept me. I do not gather with His people because I am trying to gain His favor. I do these things because I already belong to Him through Jesus Christ.
The cross has changed everything. When we remember that, our routines are no longer empty obligations. They become joyful opportunities to know the Savior who gave Himself for us.
Spiritual habits were never meant to replace the Savior.
They are the grateful response to the One who has secured us forever.
Today’s Prayer
Father, thank You for giving Your Son as the perfect sacrifice for my sins. Forgive me for the times I have allowed good spiritual habits to become empty routines. Help me never to trust in my own efforts, but always in the finished work of Jesus Christ. As I read Your Word, pray, worship, and gather with Your people, let my heart be filled with gratitude for the grace You have freely given me through Christ. In His name I pray, amen.
Before You Go
Spiritual disciplines are wonderful gifts from God, but they were never meant to replace the Savior. Today, before you open your Bible, bow your head in prayer, or gather with other believers, remember why you are able to do so with confidence.
Not because of what you have done for God, but because of what Jesus Christ has already done for you. Let every act of worship become a joyful response to the perfect sacrifice that has secured your salvation forever.
