A Greater Reality

The older I get, the more I understand just how deeply sin has affected this world. Hardly a day goes by without hearing about another tragedy, another act of violence, another deception, or another reminder that evil continues to increase. If I am honest, there are still moments when it catches me off guard. Perhaps it surprises me because there is still a part of me that wants to believe people will choose what is right, that things will somehow get better, and that goodness will overcome the darkness around us.

There is another reality that is just as certain as the one I experience today, and it is that reality that gives me hope.

Yet God's Word continually reminds me of a different reality. This world, beautiful as it can be at times, is broken because of sin. While I am thankful for every new day the Lord gives me, I also know this earth is not my permanent home. There is another reality that is just as certain as the one I experience today, and it is that reality that gives me hope when the present seems overwhelming.

Paul reminds us that Jesus Christ "gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world." Those words have become increasingly precious to me. Christ did not simply save us from the wrath that is to come. He also rescued us from belonging to this present evil age. Although we still live here, this world no longer defines who we are. Its values are no longer our guide, its rebellion is no longer our way of life, and its sinful desires no longer have to rule our hearts.

Rescued from the Dark Age

That does not mean we never struggle. We still face temptation. We still grieve. We still watch the effects of sin unfold around us every day. Yet because of Jesus Christ, we are no longer slaves to sin. The Holy Spirit now lives within every believer, transforming us day by day into the likeness of Christ. He teaches us to love righteousness, to pursue holiness, and to live differently from the world around us. We no longer have to yield ourselves to the sinful ways that once controlled us because we now belong to the One who has set us free.

A Fixed Eternal Plan

What encourages me even more is knowing that God's work is not finished. There is coming a day when this present evil world will be gone forever. Imagine a world where there is no rebellion against God, no hatred, no violence, no corruption, no tragic headlines, and no nations rising against one another. There will be no more tears, no more sorrow, no more pain, and no more death because sin itself will be removed. We will dwell with the Lord in the new heavens and the new earth where righteousness is at home, and every part of creation will reflect His perfect goodness.

None of this happened by accident. Paul reminds us that Christ gave Himself for our sins "according to the will of God and our Father." Before the foundation of the world, God had already purposed to redeem a people for Himself through His Son. Jesus willingly came, offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice, and accomplished everything necessary for our salvation. Because of Him, we are forgiven, made new, and given a hope that reaches far beyond anything this present world can offer.

When the darkness around us seems overwhelming, it helps to remember that what we see today is not the final chapter. That future changes how we live today. We do not pursue righteousness because we are trying to earn God's favor. We pursue it because we belong to the Savior who has already rescued us and is preparing a home where righteousness will dwell forever.

This present evil world is not the final chapter of our story.
The greatest reality is the eternal home Christ has prepared for us.

Before You Go

It is easy to become discouraged when we focus only on the brokenness surrounding us. The constant stream of bad news can make it seem as though evil is winning, and sometimes our hearts become weighed down by everything we see. Yet God has given us a hope that reaches far beyond today's headlines. He reminds us that this present evil world is not the end of our story.

As you go about your day, remember that you belong to Jesus Christ. He has already rescued you from the dominion of sin, and He is continuing to transform your life by His Spirit. One day He will complete what He has begun, and you will dwell with Him in a world where righteousness reigns forever. Until that glorious day, keep your eyes fixed on Christ. Let the hope of His promises strengthen your heart, shape your choices, and remind you that the greatest reality is not what you see today, but what He has prepared for those who love Him.
