When God Is Writing a Bigger Story

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture

Romans 11:11 (KJV)

“I say then, Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy.”

Reflection

One thing I have noticed about myself over the years is that I ask a lot of questions. When something happens, I want to know why. When a door closes, I want to know why. When plans change unexpectedly, I want to know why. Sometimes I think if God would simply explain everything, it would make the journey much easier.

Yet Scripture continually reminds me that God's plans are often much bigger than my understanding.

Romans 11 is a perfect example. Paul is addressing a question that must have troubled many people. Israel had been given God's promises, yet many had rejected their Messiah. From a human perspective, it could have looked as though God's plan had failed.

Paul asks the question directly: "Have they stumbled that they should fall?" In other words, is this the end of the story? Has Israel fallen beyond recovery?

His answer comes immediately: "God forbid."

What appeared to be a tragedy was not the end of God's plan. In His wisdom, God was accomplishing something far greater than anyone could have imagined. Through Israel's rejection, the gospel would go to the Gentiles. Through the salvation of the Gentiles, God would continue working His purposes for Israel. What looked like an ending was actually another chapter in a much larger story.

Beyond the Immediate Chapter

As I read this passage, I am reminded how often we view our own lives the same way. We experience disappointment and assume the opportunity is gone forever. We encounter delays and wonder if God has forgotten us. We see a closed door and conclude that the story has ended.

Yet God sees far beyond the moment that occupies our attention.

The beautiful thing about Romans 11 is that it reveals the incredible wisdom of God. He is not reacting to circumstances as they happen. He is orchestrating events according to His perfect plan. Nations, generations, and countless lives are all moving according to His purposes. What seems confusing to us is never confusing to Him.

"What looked like an ending was actually another chapter in a much larger story."

An Unsearchable Wisdom

That does not mean we will always understand what God is doing. In fact, as Paul reaches the end of this section, he bursts into praise, declaring, "O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!" The more Paul understood God's plan, the more he realized how great and unsearchable God's wisdom truly is.

There is comfort in that realization.

The God who orchestrated His plan of redemption throughout history is the same God who is working in our lives today. The details may not make sense right now. We may not understand why certain things happen or why some prayers seem delayed. Yet Romans 11 reminds us that God is always writing a bigger story than the one we can see.

The Complete Storyline

When we focus only on the chapter in front of us, it is easy to become discouraged. God, however, sees every chapter at once. He sees the beginning, the middle, and the end. He sees how every detail fits together to accomplish His purposes and bring glory to His name.

When we focus only on the chapter in front of us, it is easy to become discouraged.
God, however, sees every chapter at once.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You that Your wisdom is far greater than my understanding. When I am tempted to question what You are doing, help me to trust that You are working according to Your perfect plan. Remind me that You see what I cannot see and that Your purposes are always good. Give me faith to trust You when answers are not clear and patience to wait for the story You are writing to unfold. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

One of the hardest parts of faith is learning to trust God when we do not have all the answers. We naturally want explanations, timelines, and certainty about what comes next. Yet God often calls us to trust His character before He reveals His plan.

Romans 11 reminds us that God's purposes are often far bigger than what we can see in the moment. What looked like failure in Israel's story became part of God's redemptive plan for the nations. What appeared to be the end was actually a new beginning.

If you are carrying unanswered questions today, remember that not understanding God's plan does not mean He does not have one. The God who orchestrated salvation history is still at work. He is weaving together circumstances, people, and events according to His wisdom.

The story is not over yet. Trust the Author.
