The Source of Your Strength

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

It is easy to admire our accomplishments and forget the One who gave us the strength to accomplish them.

The Scripture

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 (KJV)

“And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”

Reflection

Have you ever looked back at something you accomplished and thought, “That came out really good”? Maybe you poured your time, effort, creativity, and energy into something, and it turned out even better than you expected. There is nothing wrong with appreciating good work or recognizing growth. But sometimes, without even noticing it, something else quietly slips into the middle of it all.

Pride.

It is such an easy trap to fall into because pride rarely announces itself loudly at first. It often hides beneath accomplishment, talent, intelligence, beauty, discipline, or success. We begin to look at what we have done and slowly start believing it all came from our own hand, our own strength, our own ability, or our own wisdom.

That is exactly what God was warning Israel about in Deuteronomy 8.

After bringing them through hardship and into blessing, the danger was no longer only suffering or lack. The danger was forgetting God once they prospered. God knew how quickly the human heart could begin taking credit for what was ultimately sustained and provided by Him all along.

Verse 18 shifts the focus back where it belongs: “But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth.”

Even the ability to accomplish, create, build, work, think, or succeed comes from Him.

"Everything we possess has ultimately been received from God in some way. Humility keeps the heart rightly aligned."

The intellect we rely on, the strength in our bodies, the talents we develop, the opportunities we receive, and even the breath in our lungs are gifts sustained by God’s mercy. Scripture reminds us that these things are not ultimately self-created possessions to glorify ourselves with, but gifts entrusted to us for His purposes.

I think this is especially important because pride can slowly distort the way we view ourselves and even the way we view God. Pride pushes the heart toward self-exaltation while humility continually remembers dependence upon the Lord.

That is why Paul asks such a powerful question in 1 Corinthians 4:7: “For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hath thou that thou didst not receive?” The verse cuts directly into human pride because everything we possess has ultimately been received from God in some way.

Humility matters deeply in Scripture because humility keeps the heart rightly aligned before God. It protects us from worshiping ourselves, our abilities, or our accomplishments. It reminds us that apart from Him, we are completely dependent upon grace.

Jesus Himself showed us this kind of humility perfectly. Though He was Lord over all, He walked in obedience, servanthood, and submission to the Father. Christ did not live to exalt Himself, but to glorify God in all He did. As believers, we are called to walk in that same spirit of humility, remembering that our lives, gifts, and accomplishments are not ultimately about elevating ourselves, but honoring the One who gave them.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, guard my heart from pride and self-exaltation. Help me remember that every good thing I have, every ability, every opportunity, and every accomplishment ultimately comes from You. Teach me to walk in humility and gratitude rather than dependence upon myself. Keep my heart focused on honoring You instead of seeking my own glory. Thank You for Your grace, Your provision, and the gifts You have entrusted to me. Help me use them faithfully for Your purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before You Go

Pride often grows quietly. It slips into moments where we begin admiring our own strength more than the God who gave it. Yet Scripture continually calls us back to humility because humility keeps our hearts tender, grateful, and dependent upon the Lord.

The beautiful thing about humility is that it does not diminish the gifts God has given you. Instead, it rightly recognizes where those gifts came from. You can work hard, develop your abilities, and strive for excellence while still acknowledging that God is the One sustaining you through it all.

As you go through today, remember that your talents, strength, intellect, and opportunities were never meant to lead you into self-glory, but into deeper gratitude and worship toward God. Walk humbly before Him, giving thanks for every good thing that ultimately began in His hands.
