Jesus Prayed: Why It Still Matters

Today's Scripture
Luke 6:12 (KJV)
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Reflection
There are a lot of directions this verse can take you. You can think about how Jesus often withdrew to pray, or even connect it to places like Psalm 109:3–4 where prayer becomes the response in the middle of opposition. But what stands out the most is the example He sets.
In Luke 6:12, Jesus went up into a mountain to pray and continued all night in prayer to God. That alone says something because He stepped away from everything, from the crowds, from the demands, and from the noise. He chose a quiet place and gave His time to prayer.
And when I read that, it always does something to me because if I am being honest, there are times when prayer does not feel as important as it should. Sometimes I feel like I do not see immediate results, other times I am just too tired, and there are moments when I convince myself that I am too busy and that I will get to it later.
But then I read about Jesus praying, and it shifts my thinking. If anyone could have said they did not need to step away and pray like that, it would have been Him, and yet He made it a priority. He was intentional about it and did not treat it as something optional.
That makes me pause and think about how I approach it because prayer is not just something we do when we have extra time or when things are going wrong. It is something that shapes us, aligns us, and keeps us connected to God in a way that nothing else can.
Jesus did not just teach about prayer, He lived it, and every time I read that, it brings me back to the same place, a reminder that prayer matters more than I sometimes realize.
Today's Prayer
Lord, I praise You for the example You have given through Jesus, showing me what it looks like to step away and spend time with You. You are worthy of my time, my attention, and my focus.
Thank You for the reminder that prayer is not something small or optional, but something that draws me closer to You and shapes my life. Even when I do not feel like it, or when I think I do not have the time, You are still calling me to come.
Help me to make prayer a priority and not something I push aside. Teach me to step away from distractions and to seek You with intention, just as Jesus did.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
Before You Go
This may be a short verse, but it says so much. Jesus stepped away, went to a quiet place, and gave His time to prayer. That alone shows us the value of being still, of separating ourselves from the noise, and choosing to be with the Father.
This is not about doing exactly what Jesus did in the same way or feeling like you have to pray all night. It is about the heart behind it. It is about coming to God, submitting, trusting, and making space to be with Him.
There will be times when the flesh gets in the way. You may feel too tired, too distracted, or too busy. Life can pull you in so many directions that it becomes easy to push prayer aside without even realizing it.
But God is not asking for something complicated. He is simply calling you to come.
To sit with Him, to talk with Him, to trust Him. Just like Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet, choosing what mattered most in that moment. That kind of time with God is not wasted. It is where your heart is strengthened and your trust begins to grow.
So do not overthink it. Do not feel like it has to be perfect or long.
Just come.
