Encouragement can change everything, even before the storm ends

Today's Scripture

Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

Reflection

Have you ever had a moment where you felt like no one was really listening to you? You tried to give advice, you saw what could go wrong, but it was ignored. Then things turned out exactly how you thought they would, or maybe even worse.

Or maybe you have been on the other side of that. Like the centurion in this chapter, you trusted someone who seemed like they knew what they were doing. You followed what sounded right at the time, but it did not turn out the way you expected. Now you are left dealing with the outcome, and things feel worse than before.

That is what makes this chapter so real.

Before we get to Acts 27:36, there is tension, frustration, and a situation that keeps getting worse. Paul had already warned them that the journey would be dangerous, but his words were not taken seriously. Instead, they listened to others and continued on, and it led them straight into a storm.

What started as a decision turned into a struggle for survival. There came a point where all hope felt lost. They had gone days without seeing the sun or stars, and the situation had worn them down. It was no longer about being right or wrong. It was about getting through.

But right in the middle of that, something changes. God speaks, and Paul begins to encourage them. Not based on what things looked like, but based on what God had said. He tells them to be of good cheer, even though they are still in the storm. That kind of encouragement does not come from circumstances. It comes from knowing that God is still in control.

And that is what leads us to this moment. “Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.” This is the turning point. Nothing around them had fully changed yet. They were still in the storm, still dealing with the aftermath of wrong decisions, still in a place that felt uncertain. But something inside them shifted.

They moved from fear to encouragement. From being worn down to being strengthened. And it all started with God’s word being spoken into the situation.

That is what makes this verse so powerful. It shows us that encouragement does not always come after everything is fixed. Sometimes it comes right in the middle, when things are still unclear, but God has already spoken. And when we hold on to what He says, it has the power to change how we face what we are going through.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I praise You for being present even in the middle of the storm. You see what I am facing, and nothing catches You off guard.

Thank You for the times You have spoken into my situation and brought encouragement when I needed it most. Even when things feel uncertain, You are still in control.

Help me to trust what You have said, even when everything around me feels unsettled. Strengthen my heart so I am not led by fear, but by Your truth.

Teach me to receive Your encouragement and to hold on to it, knowing that You are working even when I cannot see it yet.
In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before You Go

There are moments in life where everything around you feels off. Things did not go the way you expected, decisions led to harder situations, and it can feel like you are just trying to get through it.

But this verse shows us something important. Encouragement does not always come after everything is fixed. Sometimes it comes right in the middle of what you are facing.

God spoke into that situation through Paul, and even though the storm had not ended, it changed how they responded. They were able to take strength again.

That same truth applies now. God still speaks into our situations. Through His Word and through the work of His Spirit, He brings encouragement right where we are.

When you look at Jesus, you see that clearly. He did not wait for everything to be perfect before bringing hope. He stepped into broken situations and brought truth, peace, and assurance.

So if you are in a place where things feel uncertain, do not wait for everything to change before you take hold of encouragement. Hold on to what God has already said.

Because even in the storm, He is still speaking.
