Renewing Your Mind: Embracing the Beauty of God’s Works

Have you ever had one of those days where you ate all the wrong things? Too much sugar. Too many fried foods. Heavy meals that seemed like a good idea at the time.
In moderation, those things are fine. But when we overdo it, we feel it. Our stomach lets us know pretty quickly that what we consumed was not helpful.
It is amazing how much what we put into our bodies affects how we feel.
But the same is true of our minds.
Just like our stomachs react to unhealthy food, our minds react to what we constantly take in. The thoughts we dwell on. The conversations we replay. The worries we allow to grow.
Sometimes we get so caught up in the pressures of life that we forget to focus on the Lord and His works. Work responsibilities. Family concerns. Financial stress. Before long, our thoughts are filled with everything except God.
When that happens, our perspective slowly shifts without us even realizing it.
So how do we correct that?
Remembering God’s Goodness
One of the first steps in renewing our minds is remembering.
When you are walking through a hard season, it helps to pause and look back. Think about the times God carried you through before. The prayers He answered. The strength He gave when you felt weak.
Remembering changes the atmosphere of our thoughts.
Scripture is filled with reminders of His faithfulness. When I read about Abraham and how God fulfilled His promises, I am always amazed. The details. The timing. The way everything unfolded exactly as God said it would.
He has not changed.
And that is why Psalm 77:12 says, “I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.”
Notice it does not say simply remember. It says meditate and talk.
That leads us to something important.
It is easy to find someone to complain to. We can talk at length about what is going wrong. But what if we chose to speak about what God has done instead? What if His goodness became part of our everyday conversation?
What we speak about often reveals what we are dwelling on.
Guarding What We Allow In
This is where we have to be intentional.
Philippians 4:8 reminds us to think on things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report. That kind of thinking does not happen by accident. It requires attention.
The world constantly feeds us fear, comparison, negativity, and noise. If we are not careful, those things will quietly take root in our minds.
And when they do, they begin to influence how we see everything.
That is why Paul’s words in Romans 12:2 are so powerful. He does not simply say adjust your thinking. He says be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Transformation is deeper than surface change. It starts inside.
When we allow God’s Word to permeate our lives, something begins to shift. As we read it, reflect on it, and pray through it, our thoughts slowly align with His truth.
And when our thoughts change, our responses begin to change too.
A Mind Renewed
Renewing your mind does not mean ignoring problems or pretending they do not exist. Instead, it means choosing to filter those problems through the truth of who God is.
It means remembering that He has been faithful before and trusting that He will be faithful again.
Psalm 143:5 says, “I remember the days of old; I meditate on all thy works; I muse on the work of thy hands.”
There is a pattern in Scripture. Remember. Meditate. Speak. Trust.
As we practice those things, we begin to see the beauty of God’s works more clearly. And that clarity brings hope.
With His help and direction, we can face challenges without being consumed by them. We can live with hope, joy, and peace, even in seasons that feel uncertain.
So I encourage you to embrace the renewing of your mind. Fill it with the goodness of God. Speak of His works. Reflect on His faithfulness.
Because when your mind is renewed by His truth, your life will begin to reflect it.
Scripture Reading
Take time this week to slowly read and reflect on these passages:
- Philippians 4:8
- Psalm 19:14
- Romans 12:2
- Psalm 143:5
Read them more than once if you can. Pay attention to what they teach about guarding your thoughts and renewing your mind through God’s truth.
Reflection Questions
Use these questions for personal study, journaling, or family discussion:
- What is the analogy made between unhealthy foods and what we allow into our minds?
- Why is it important to remember God’s goodness during difficult seasons?
- What are you currently feeding your mind on a daily basis?
- How can you intentionally make God’s Word a greater part of your thoughts and conversations?
- What does it mean to you personally to be transformed by the renewing of your mind?
- How can meditating on God’s past faithfulness strengthen you for present challenges?
- What practical step can you take this week to guard your heart and mind more carefully?
Take your time with these. A renewed mind often begins with honest reflection before the Lord.
