Be of Good Cheer: Finding Peace in a Troubled World

When Quiet Feels Boring
When I was younger, the idea of living in the country did not appeal to me at all. I remember long drives to visit family and thinking there was nothing out there. No stores. No noise. No activity. It just felt boring to me.
I enjoyed being around people. I liked having things to do and places to go. The quiet did not feel peaceful. It just felt empty.
As I have gotten older, my perspective has changed. I have come to appreciate stillness in a way I never did before. There is something calming about stepping away from constant noise and responsibility. When it is quiet, you can think more clearly. You can pray without distraction. You can slow down.
But over time I have learned something important. Quiet surroundings are not the same thing as true peace.
You can live in the country and still carry worry. You can sit in silence and still feel unsettled inside. That is because real peace is not just about what is happening around you. It is about what is settled in your heart.
True Peace vs. Temporary Relief
That is why the words of Jesus in John 16:33 matter so much. He does not promise an easy life. He says plainly, “In the world ye shall have tribulation.” Trouble is part of living here. We all experience it in different ways.
But He does not stop there.
He says, “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
That statement changes everything.
He is not telling us to ignore hardship. He is reminding us that hardship does not have the final word. He has already overcome the very world that brings tribulation.
In John 14:27, Jesus expands on what that peace looks like. He says, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
That verse helps us understand something important. The peace Jesus gives is not the same kind of peace the world offers.
The world offers temporary relief. A good day. A solved problem. A break from stress. When circumstances improve, we feel calmer. But when those circumstances change, that calm feeling can disappear just as quickly.
The peace Jesus gives is different. It does not depend on everything going well. It comes from knowing that we belong to Him and that He is in control, even when life feels uncertain.
Peace from the Lord Himself
This is why Paul writes in 2 Thessalonians 3:16, “Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means.” Notice that he calls Him the Lord of peace. Peace is not just something God hands out. It is part of who He is. And Paul reminds us that this peace is available always, not just when life is smooth.
But how is that kind of peace possible?
Colossians 1:20 gives us the answer. It tells us that Jesus made peace through the blood of His cross. He reconciled us to God. The greatest separation we had was between us and our Creator, and Christ removed that barrier completely. Because of Him, we are no longer at odds with God. When that relationship is restored, real and lasting peace becomes possible.
Be of Good Cheer
We will experience tribulation. That is certain. But we can also be of good cheer, because Jesus has already overcome.
If you find yourself searching for peace, consider where you are looking for it. Is it only in quiet circumstances, or in Christ Himself?
True peace is not found in silence. It is found in a Savior.
Scripture Reading
Take time this week to slowly read and reflect on these passages:
- John 16:33
- John 14:27
- 2 Thessalonians 3:16
- Colossians 1:20
Read them more than once if you can. Notice what each verse teaches you about the source of true peace.
Reflection Questions
Use these questions for personal study, journaling, or family discussion:
- What kind of peace does Jesus promise us in John 16:33?
- In what ways have you sought peace in the world, and how has that search fallen short?
- How has your relationship with God helped you find peace in the midst of difficult circumstances?
- What steps can you take to deepen your relationship with God and experience the peace that only He can give?
- How does the promise of eternal life through faith in Jesus give you hope and peace for the future?
Take your time with these. Sometimes peace grows as we slow down and honestly examine our hearts before the Lord.
