Resurrection Celebration: The Women At The Empty Tomb Rejoiced

The Resurrection of Jesus: A Victory That Brings Joy and Hope

Early on that first Sabbath morning, the women who had followed Jesus came to the tomb. They carried spices to honor Him, hearts heavy with sorrow and minds weighed down by grief. The events of the crucifixion still pressed upon them, and it seemed as if death had the final word.

But the story would not end in despair. When they arrived, the tomb was empty. Their grief turned to awe, fear, and then joy. This moment, the first Resurrection Celebration, shows us how God transforms mourning into hope. Through the women’s eyes, we see what it looks like to move from sorrow to life.

The Women’s First Response: Fear and Great Joy

Sometimes we get lost in our feelings and understandings, much like the women at the tomb. They were on their way early that Sunday morning, expecting to continue the burial process for Jesus' body. I can imagine how they were feeling, hope, sad, and lost. They were expecting to find the tomb sealed, just as it had been after His death.

📖 Mark 16:4 – And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

These women were observant, always watching—at His crucifixion, at His death, and now at His tomb. Their dedication and faithfulness through these painful moments stand as a powerful testament. They had witnessed His suffering and burial, but this moment would change everything.

Faithful Followers: The Women at the Tomb

Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome, Joanna, and the other women went to the tomb with devotion and determination (Mark 16:1). They had prepared spices to anoint Jesus’ body, showing their faithfulness even while carrying sorrow. I can picture them walking together, hearts heavy, yet committed to honor Him.

Their presence at the tomb shows us what steadfast devotion really looks like. They didn’t know what they would find, but they kept moving forward, trusting and loyal, setting the stage for everything that was about to unfold (Luke 24:5-6).

This moment reminds me that faithfulness often means showing up, even when we have no idea what will happen next. The women’s courage and devotion invite us to do the same, approaching God prepared, willing, and trusting Him, even when we cannot yet see the outcome.

The Joy That Overcame Fear
The Moment of Rejoicing

Let’s focus on that first moment of joy, the moment the angels reminded the women of Jesus’ words. In essence, they were saying, “He is risen, just as He told you before.” This was the turning point where grief and fear gave way to hope and celebration.

Fear and Great Joy

Even with awe and trembling at the angel’s presence, their joy was overwhelming. They could not contain it. The excitement of the resurrection moved them to act immediately, and they ran to tell the disciples and anyone who would listen.

📖 Matthew 28:8 – And they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

Sharing the Good News

Can you imagine that feeling, so life-changing and joyful that you cannot wait to tell others? I have had some “good news to share” moments in my life, but nothing as great as this. That is exactly how the women felt. Their hope was restored, their faith strengthened, and their hearts were full of awe as they encountered the risen Savior.

This moment reminds us that the resurrection is not just an event from the past. It is a foundation for our hope and faith today. The joy of the Resurrection Celebration calls us to share the good news, the gospel with those around us, just as the women did on that first Passover morning.

Rejoicing Through Faith

When I think about the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it brings me joy and renews my hope. Especially during times when life piles up on me, I remember the women at the tomb and how they rejoiced in the risen Savior. Their devotion reminds me that His resurrection brings life.

Even though the women saw the empty tomb with their own eyes and met Jesus after He rose, we can rejoice even more through faith. As Peter reminds us (1 Peter 1:8-9), we can love Him, believe in Him, and experience joy that is full of glory. Their experience points us to a deeper, lasting joy that comes from trusting Him.

The Power of the Resurrection

Jesus’ resurrection holds a profound meaning for our faith. Because He died for our sins and was raised to make us right with God, His resurrection guarantees that we, too, will be raised to eternal life (John 14:19). This is not just a promise; it is a living hope we can hold onto every day.

The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is still at work in us now. His resurrection did not end at the tomb. It continues to give life to everyone who believes in Him. As Paul declares (1 Corinthians 15:55), death has lost its sting, and the grave has no victory.

Walking with the Women

There are even more reasons to rejoice. Jesus has shown that He is true and faithful to His promises. The empty tomb stands as proof that God’s Word never fails (Psalm 119:90, 2 Corinthians 1:20).

I imagine myself walking with the women at the tomb, sad and with hope fading. Then, everything changes. I am immediately filled with joy and awe, overwhelmed with gratitude for His victory over sin and death. This is the joy of the Resurrection Celebration, a joy that continues to fill our hearts today.

Share the Joy of the Resurrection

We hope this message of Jesus’ resurrection fills you with hope and joy. His victory over sin and death is not just history, something we can share with the world today.
