Today's Scripture

But when you are praying, first forgive anyone you are holding a grudge against, so that your Father in heaven will forgive your sins, too.
— Mark 11:25 (NLT)

Reflection

I won’t write this one like my usual devotionals. There’s something about this verse that really opened my eyes. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve held grudges or carried unforgiveness, all while going about my time praying, asking for forgiveness, and not just that, but making requests as well. I’m sure you can relate.

We all know how difficult it can be to forgive, especially when we’ve been hurt or belittled by someone. It feels almost impossible sometimes, doesn’t it? But the reality is that this verse in Mark 11:25 speaks directly to that. It’s almost like Jesus is saying, “Before you ask anything of God, check your heart. Make sure you’ve forgiven.”

It’s one thing to ask for forgiveness for our own wrongdoings, but when we hold onto grudges, we block our ability to fully receive forgiveness ourselves. Our Father in heaven has shown us grace, and He calls us to do the same for others. The truth is, the more we hold onto unforgiveness, the more it weighs on our hearts. It’s a barrier to true peace and prayer.

Jesus doesn’t say forgiveness is easy, but He does say it’s necessary for our relationship with God. It’s about releasing the grip that bitterness and anger have on us, so we can truly experience the freedom that comes from God’s forgiveness. If we want to move forward in our faith, in prayer, and in life, we have to let go of the things that weigh us down, even if it’s painful.

Today's Prayer

Father, thank You for Your endless grace and forgiveness toward me. I come before You acknowledging the difficulty of forgiving those who have hurt me. Help me to release my grudges and choose to forgive, not for my own sake, but because You’ve called me to do so. Give me the strength to follow Your example, to extend grace even when it feels impossible. Help me to trust You in this process, knowing that forgiveness is part of walking in Your will. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

Take a moment to think about any grudges you may be holding. Ask God to give you the strength to forgive, even if it feels impossible. Forgiveness doesn’t mean what someone did was right, it means you’re choosing to let go of the hurt and trust God with the healing.
