The Grace of Giving: What 2 Corinthians 8:9 Teaches Us
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

Today's Scripture
2 Corinthians 8:9 (KJV)
"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich."
Reflection
I'm not a big thrift store person. As a matter of fact, I don't really like stores where I have to search through things, whether the items are new or used. I understand the concept though. Donated items that people no longer want or need are given to a store so that someone else can purchase them at a lower cost.
Most of the time people give things away during seasons of cleaning out the house or after the loss of a loved one. Things that are no longer needed are passed along to someone else.
I can see how easy it is to give up the things we no longer want. But what about the things that we treasure? The things that have value to us?
This is where the heart of giving is truly revealed.
In 2 Corinthians chapter 8, Paul is encouraging the believers in Corinth to follow through with their desire to help the church in Jerusalem. The believers there were facing real needs. Paul reminds them of the example of the churches in Macedonia. Even though they were experiencing poverty themselves, they still desired to give. In fact, they gave beyond what seemed reasonable because their hearts were moved by the grace of God.
The Corinthians had begun with great enthusiasm, yet Paul gently reminds them of something even greater than their original zeal.
He points them to Jesus.
"For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich."
Jesus possessed all riches. His glory, authority, and position were not lacking in any way. Yet He willingly humbled Himself. He stepped into the limitations of human life, walked among us, and ultimately gave His life for our redemption.
This is the grace of giving.
Christ did not give what was convenient. He gave what was most precious. Because of His sacrifice, we have been given riches that cannot be measured by earthly standards. Forgiveness, reconciliation with God, eternal life, and the presence of the Holy Spirit are treasures that begin now, not only in the future.
When we remember what Christ has done for us, it changes how we see giving. It moves us away from simply letting go of what we do not need and invites us to reflect the generosity that was first shown to us.
The grace we have received becomes the grace we extend.
Today's Prayer
Lord, Lord, thank You for the grace that was shown through Jesus Christ. Though He was rich, He became poor for my sake so that I might receive the riches of Your mercy and salvation. Help me to remember this truth in how I live and in how I give. Shape my heart so that generosity flows from gratitude for what You have done. Let my life reflect the grace that I have received. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Before You Go
It is easy to give away what we no longer want, but the grace of giving asks us to look deeper at our hearts.
Paul reminds us in Acts 20:35 (KJV), "It is more blessed to give than to receive."
The generosity we see in Christ is not simply about possessions. It is about a heart shaped by gratitude and love for God. As you go through your day, remember the riches you have already received through Christ. Let that truth influence how you respond to the needs around you.
When we remember what He has given for us, our hands open more freely and our hearts reflect His grace.
