When the Search Turns to Joy

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

When we cannot see the way forward, we can still seek the One who is greater than what surrounds us.

The Scripture

Psalm 70:4 (KJV)

“Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, God be magnified.”

Reflection

I need my glasses to drive, and honestly, I need them to see much of anything clearly. Even around the house, I usually need them, but if I'm being completely honest, I don't really like wearing them. So when I'm home, I tend to take them off. One day, I was getting ready to go out and realized I couldn't find them.

We can choose to remember who God is when our circumstances are trying to make us forget.

I looked in all the obvious places. Then I looked in places where I thought they might have ended up. I searched and searched, but they were nowhere to be found. Of course, I didn't stop looking. I went back to places I had already searched and looked again. I checked places that made no sense at all, because when you need something badly enough, suddenly every possible location seems worth checking. Eventually, I found them—in the obvious place, of course.

And I was so happy to find them. It seems like such a small thing, but there is something about searching for something you need and finally finding it that brings a sense of relief and joy. The thing hadn't changed. It had been there all along. But my experience of not having it made finding it again feel especially wonderful.

Psalm 70:4 reminds us of something much greater: "Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee." There is a reason for the joy of those who seek the Lord. We aren't searching for someone who is unwilling to be found. We aren't seeking a God who is distant, indifferent, or unaware of what we are going through. We are seeking the living God.

Seeking Him in the Middle of the Problem

And when we seek Him, we discover that He is our help, our salvation, and our hope. Sometimes life can feel a little like searching. We may be looking for an answer to a problem, waiting for something to change, praying for a particular situation, or simply trying to find our footing when life doesn't look the way we expected. We can search and search and still feel as though the answer is nowhere in sight.

But Scripture continually calls us back to the Lord—not simply to seek what He can give us, but to seek Him. That distinction matters because sometimes we can become so focused on finding the solution that we forget to seek the One who is with us in the middle of the problem.

"Sometimes faith means continuing to seek when we don't yet see the answer."

God Be Magnified

The psalmist says, "Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee." Notice where the joy is found: in Him. Our circumstances may not immediately change. The answer we are waiting for may not arrive when we want it to. The thing we are praying about may still be unresolved. Yet there can still be a deep joy found in knowing the Lord.

Jesus told His disciples that their sorrow would be turned into joy. In John 16:20, He said, "your sorrow shall be turned into joy." He wasn't pretending that sorrow wasn't real. He was reminding them that sorrow would not have the final word. That is an important truth for us to remember. There are seasons when sorrow feels like it has taken up permanent residence in our lives. We can become so accustomed to the difficulty that we forget joy is still possible. But our God is not limited by the circumstances that currently surround us.

He can turn sorrow into joy. He can bring peace into a troubled heart. He can give strength when we feel weak. He can make us rejoice even while we are still waiting.

And perhaps that is part of what the psalmist means when he says, "God be magnified." When we magnify God, we aren't making Him greater than He already is. God is already great. Nothing we say or do can increase His greatness. But we can make much of His greatness. We can choose to remember who He is when our circumstances are trying to make us forget.

God is great when the answer comes. God is great while we wait. God is great when we understand. God is great when we don't. And because He is great, we can continue to seek Him. The same God who called us to Himself has not stopped being our help. The same Jesus who gave Himself for our salvation is not distant from us now. He knows our sorrow, understands our weakness, and remains our hope.

Keep seeking Him—not because God has been hiding from you,
but because the One you are seeking was there all along.

Today’s Prayer

Father, sometimes I become so focused on what I am searching for that I forget to seek You. Help me to remember that You are my greatest treasure and my greatest source of hope. When I am discouraged, teach me to continue seeking You. When sorrow feels heavy, remind me that it will not have the final word. Thank You for Jesus, for the salvation You have given me, and for the joy that is found in knowing You. Help me magnify You in every season, whether I am waiting, searching, or rejoicing. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

There may be something you have been searching for in your life right now. Perhaps you are looking for an answer, waiting for a change, praying for a loved one, or simply asking God to show you what comes next. Don't become so consumed with finding the answer that you overlook the One who is already with you.

God is great. He is greater than the problem you are facing, greater than the uncertainty surrounding you, and greater than the things you cannot yet understand. And because Jesus has already accomplished what we could never accomplish for ourselves, we don't have to approach God as people without hope. Through Christ, we belong to Him.

There will be times when we cry. There will be times when we wait. There will even be times when we search and wonder why we cannot seem to find what we need. But Scripture reminds us that sorrow is not our permanent destination. Jesus promised that sorrow would be turned into joy, and the Lord remains faithful through every part of that journey.

So keep seeking Him. If you don't see the answer today, seek Him tomorrow. If you have already looked in the same place, look again. Not because God has misplaced the answer, but because sometimes the waiting itself teaches us to look beyond what we want and recognize the greatness of the One we have.

And when you finally see what God has been doing, you may discover something wonderful: He was there all along.
