Patience and Grace for Others

Reflection

Can we talk about being patient with others? I realize that I’m not always the most patient person or the most graceful. Just the other day, I had a moment of realization. Sometimes, I let differences between other Christians really get under my skin. And I’m not talking about the gospel here, but the things that aren’t as clear, the areas where others may not yet have full understanding or maturity in their faith.

It’s so easy to get frustrated when someone doesn’t understand things the way I do, when they seem to be struggling in an area I’ve moved beyond. I’ll admit, sometimes it feels tempting to just write them off or walk away from the fellowship. But God doesn’t get any glory from that. We are supposed to be unified in the faith, to walk alongside one another as we grow in Christ.

The KJV uses the word “receive,” but other versions use “welcome” or “accept.” I love how the Greek Lexicon defines this word—it means to “take by the hand and lead aside” or “to take into friendship.” It's not just about tolerating someone or letting them be. It’s about actively showing grace, offering friendship, and gently leading them. Christ didn’t just accept us when we had everything together.  So, we are called to do the same for others, especially those who are still growing in their faith.

For me, I’m determined to do the same. I need grace where I’m limited in understanding, and I will extend my hand to those who need the same. This is how we begin to grow in unity of faith, and God is glorified in our care for one another.
