Light That Stands Out in the Darkness

Today's Scripture

Matthew 5:14 (KJV)
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

Reflection

Most mornings when I get up, one of the first things I do is light my candles. The warm scent helps wake me up, and the soft glow creates a calm, quiet environment. The light is not strong enough to fill the entire room, but it does something interesting. It draws my attention. In the darkness around it, the flame becomes the focal point, flickering steadily and illuminating the space closest to it.

That contrast is what makes the light noticeable.

Jesus says we are the light of the world, not because we produce light on our own, but because His light is at work in us. Light does not have to be overwhelming to be seen. Even a small flame stands out when surrounded by darkness. It naturally draws the eye, not by effort, but simply by being what it is.

Our faith works much the same way. When Christ is present in us, His light shows through in quiet ways. In kindness. In integrity. In how we speak, how we listen, and how we live. As reflections of Him, our lives reveal His character and point others to God. The light we reflect is not about drawing attention to ourselves, but about directing hearts toward the One whose light we carry.

Just as a city set on a hill cannot be hidden, a life shaped by Jesus will be noticed. Not because we are striving for recognition, but because His light cannot be concealed.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your merciful kindness that comforts me in every season. When I am corrected, teach me to still trust in Your love. When I am hurting, surround me with Your peace. Let Your Word reassure my heart and remind me that Your compassion toward me never fades. Help me rest in Your comfort today. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before You Go

As you move through your day, pay attention to how your life quietly speaks. Light does not announce itself. It simply shows up and changes what surrounds it. Jesus said, Matthew 5:16 (KJV), “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

This is not about drawing attention to us, but about revealing God’s character through how we live. In ordinary moments, in faithful obedience, and in sincere love, Christ’s light becomes visible. Allow your words, your actions, and your responses to point beyond you and toward God. When His light is reflected through your life, it does exactly what it was meant to do. It leads others to Him.

Living as His Light

Jesus reminds us that those who belong to Him are called to shine, not in our own strength, but through the light He gives. Being the light of the world is living a life shaped by obedience to Christ, faithfully reflecting Him wherever He places us.
