Reflection
During times of emergencies, when the power is out or there's bad weather, an old hurricane lamp can be a lifesaver. At least, that's what we used to call it. It’s a simple device, a clear glass covering an oil-filled base, with a large wick to burn. And there’s a special kind of oil for these lamps, oil that’s designed to keep the light burning bright. But here’s the thing: the quality of the oil greatly affects the flame. If the oil is impure or of low quality, the flame will flicker, burn unevenly, or even go out completely. But when the oil is pure, it burns steadily and brightly.
In Exodus 27:20, the Israelites are commanded to bring pure olive oil so that the lamps in the tabernacle would always stay lit. This was a continuous, necessary supply, something that needed to be maintained for the light to burn brightly. The oil wasn’t just for a moment; it was for a constant and reliable flame, day and night.
This speaks to us today. Just as the Israelites were instructed to keep their lamps burning with pure oil, we are called to keep the light of God’s presence burning in our lives. That “pure oil” represents the Holy Spirit, our continuous supply of spiritual nourishment. Just as the lamp needed a steady stream of oil to remain lit, we need to continually be filled with the Holy Spirit to keep our faith strong and vibrant.
Our lives can only shine as brightly as the source of light we’re drawing from. If we allow impurities, distractions, sin, or spiritual complacency, to take the place of the pure oil, the light can dim. But when we stay connected to God through His Word, prayer, and His presence, the Holy Spirit continuously refills us, keeping our hearts burning for Him.
