The Courage of Zelophehad’s Daughters

There’s something about the simple stories in the Bible that seem like just history, but they hold so much meaning when you take a closer look. Take the five daughters of Zelophehad, for example. As the Israelites were getting ready to enter the Promised Land, these women had no inheritance waiting for them. But instead of staying quiet, they stood boldly before the leaders and made a request no one had ever dared to make. Their story is such a powerful reminder of the amazing gift and inheritance waiting for us too.

Who Was Zelophehad? A Look at His Story

Who was Zelophehad? Honestly, there isn’t much detail about his life in Scripture, but here’s what we do know. He was from the tribe of Manasseh, and you can find his family’s lineage mentioned in 1 Chronicles 7 and Numbers 26. What stands out most is that he had no sons—only daughters, five of them to be exact. During that time, having sons was crucial for a family because sons carried the family name, held the inheritance, and provided protection and stability. Daughters, on the other hand, typically became part of their husband’s family. The other thing we know is that Zelophehad died in the wilderness along with the rest of the Israelites who were of a certain age. With no son to carry on his line, his inheritance of land was seemingly lost. But his daughters weren’t about to let the story end there. Let’s meet them next.

The Dilemma of Zelophehad’s Daughters

Zelophehad had five daughters—shoutout to all the daughters! Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah were their names, and they were all unmarried. (Numbers 27} These women were preparing to enter the Promised Land, a place that symbolized the inheritance of the Lord, but they were faced with a huge dilemma. The Lord had given Moses specific instructions for dividing the land (Numbers 26:52–56), and those instructions centered around male heirs. With no sons in their family, the daughters were left without an inheritance, and their father’s name was at risk of being erased from among their kin. Would they be counted among the fatherless and poor, left without land or family affiliation? What were they to do in the face of such uncertainty?

Understanding Their Longing for the Inheritance of the Promised Land

In our western society, it’s hard to fully grasp or relate to the culture of the Israelites during this time. Let’s be real—our modern family dynamics, with so many broken homes and the independence-driven mindset we live in, make this story even harder to connect with. But imagine this: the Israelites had been wandering with no real home, no secure portion of land to call their own, and no access to the rich and abundant foods they dreamed about. All they had was the promise given to their forefathers—a land flowing with milk and honey, a prosperous and beautiful place that God Himself had prepared and cared for (Deuteronomy 8:7, Ezekiel 20:6). Now picture hearing about this incredible inheritance, walking through tough times, getting to the edge of it, and then realizing you might not have a part of it. That’s where Zelophehad’s daughters found themselves—a heartbreaking and uncertain reality.

A Greater Inheritance: From Earthly Loss to Heavenly Gain

This story made me think about my own inheritance. When my father passed away, I didn’t receive any inheritance—he had very little to his name. That’s a story for another time, but even though I’m without an earthly inheritance, I’m not without a heavenly one.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." (1 Peter 1:3–5)

Maybe the daughters of Zelophehad felt the same sting of loss. The death of their father not only left them without a leader but also without a claim to their inheritance. Their names weren’t on the list for the Promised Land, all because they were women in a culture that didn’t grant them those rights. Imagine the heartbreak—name lost, inheritance gone, hope fading. As we’ll see shortly, their story didn’t end there.

Standing Boldly: The Daughters’ Petition and Moses' Response

Here we find the five daughters standing before Moses, the leaders, and the entire congregation at the Tent of Meeting. How incredible is their boldness to ask something no other woman had dared to ask before? I’m sure they weren’t the only ones facing this situation, but they were the ones who spoke up. Isn’t that inspiring? I got so excited reading this part of their story. They began by saying that their father had died, but he shouldn’t be excluded from receiving an inheritance just because he had no sons. They also pointed out that their father wasn’t involved in Korah’s rebellion, so had he been alive, he would have been eligible for the inheritance.

The Simple Yet Powerful Question They Asked

Okay, y’all, I’m getting excited just recalling this story! The fact that they stood before everyone shows just how important their petition was and how much impact it could have. And then Moses, the leader, takes their case seriously. He doesn’t dismiss them based on cultural norms or tradition but brings their request before the Lord. Exodus 18:22 shows us that Moses recognized this was a major issue, so he sought God’s guidance. He didn’t make a hasty decision based on what had always been done, but instead, he wanted to ensure that God’s will was done.

God's Response: A Promise for Everyone

Let’s look at how the LORD responded to Moses. I won’t give you all the details, but let’s focus on what’s significant for the daughters of Zelophehad. You can read more in Numbers 27. The LORD told Moses that the daughters’ petition was right—legitimate and fair. He commanded Moses to give them a portion of land among their father’s family. And not just any old piece of land but the very inheritance their father would have received if he were alive.

Thank you, LORD, for looking past cultural traditions and including anyone—regardless of sex, financial status, or ethnicity—in Your promises. God used their story to show that His blessings and inheritance are for everyone. Through their boldness, He conveyed a powerful truth: His kingdom and promises are not limited by earthly roles or traditions. Their situation pointed ahead to His greater plan of salvation, where faith in Jesus makes us all part of God’s family. Through Jesus, we’re all heirs of His promise—male, female, Jew, Gentile, slave, or free. If we belong to Christ, we are His heirs. Yes, y’all, we receive an inheritance! (Galatians 3:27–29). What an incredible promise to cling to!

A Legacy of Boldness and Trust

Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah—the daughters of Zelophehad—not only received their father’s inheritance, but the LORD also established their case as a statute for all of Israel. Their boldness changed history, proving that God’s justice is for everyone.

These women modeled courage, trust in God’s promises, and a commitment to justice that we can all learn from. Their story reminds us that we, too, can go to God with our petitions, requests, and concerns, knowing He hears and cares.

So, let’s take a lesson from these remarkable daughters and approach God with boldness, trusting in His justice and rejoicing in the eternal inheritance we have through Christ. “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings” (Hebrews 10:22).
