Encouragement in our work for Christ

Daily Devotional
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.
Three blocks showing a frown, neutral face, and a hand picking up the smiling block, symbolizing the joy and encouragement that comes from receiving a good report.
Just as John rejoiced in a good report about Gaius, we too find joy when we see others walking in truth, encouraging us in our own faith.

Today's Scripture

"For I rejoiced greatly when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth."
—3 John 1:3-4

Reflection

As a parent, it feels good when a report comes back to you from school that your child is well-behaved or follows directions well. Maybe it’s not your children, but hearing kind words about your character or hearing a positive report about your actions brings encouragement. We all want to hear that we are doing well, no matter our age. Whether it’s a compliment from a spouse, recognition at work, or a kind word from a parent even when you’re 40, those affirmations mean something.

In 3 John, we get a personal letter to Gaius, letting him know how other workers of the gospel brought back a good report of him. The joy that John expresses in hearing how Gaius has walked in the truth and cared for others is remarkable. It’s not just about the work that he’s done, but the heart behind it. Gaius is a generous disciple who continually shows care for the workers of the gospel, making sure they have what they need to continue their mission.

What stands out to me in this passage is the encouragement that comes from others seeing our work for Christ. We may not always see the fruit ourselves, but when others speak on how they’ve witnessed God’s work in us, it’s a reminder that we are walking in the truth and living out His calling. Let that be a reminder to you today. Your work for the Kingdom, no matter how small it may seem, is noticed by others and, more importantly, by God.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for the reminder that our work for You does not go unnoticed. I pray that, like Gaius, I would continue to walk in truth and show love and generosity to those around me. Help me to be an encouragement to others, just as they are to me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

Take a moment to reflect on the encouragement you’ve received from others. How has someone’s positive feedback helped you continue in your walk with Christ? Today, ask God to help you be an encouragement to someone else, just as John’s letter was a blessing to Gaius.

Ask yourself: How can I live out my faith in a way that encourages others in their journey with Christ?
