Fishers of Men: The Call to Share the Good News

Daily Devotional
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.
A man in a small boat fishing at sunrise on a quiet lake, representing Jesus’ call to be fishers of men.
A peaceful morning on the lake reminds us that sharing Jesus takes patience and faith, one act of obedience and one fish at a time.

Today's Scripture

Mark 1:17 (KJV)
And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Reflection

I’ll never forget a beautiful sunny day when my brother and I set out with my father to go to a fishing pier. It was so exciting to see everything that went into it, prepping the bait, casting the line, and then waiting patiently for that moment when the fish would finally bite.

Fishing takes time, patience, and a bit of faith that something will happen beneath the surface. Jesus used this familiar work to speak to the hearts of those who were already fishermen. John, James, Simon, and Andrew were used to catching fish, but now they were being called to something greater, to become fishers of men.

That call didn’t end with the disciples. We see it all throughout the Bible, the woman at the well who couldn’t wait to tell others about Jesus, and the man who was once possessed, now told to go home and share all that the Lord had done for him. The same calling rests on us too.

You don’t need a pulpit or a title to tell others about Jesus. The people around us see our lives, they hear our words, and they notice the changes God has made in us. Just like fishing, it takes patience and faith. Sometimes you’ll share and see no immediate response, but you keep casting the line because it’s God who does the drawing.

Our testimonies, our words, even our quiet example, can be what God uses to draw someone near. He just asks that we follow Him and trust Him with the catch.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me to follow You. Help me to share Your love with others around me. Give me patience to wait, faith to speak, and courage to live out what You have placed in my heart. Let my life reflect Christ so that others may see You through me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

You don’t need to be a preacher to share the Gospel. You just need to be willing. Ask God to show you one person this week who needs encouragement, and trust that your story and your faith can help draw them closer to Him.

Sharing the Gospel is more than words; it’s how we live each day. When others see kindness, honesty, and love in our actions, they see Christ in us. Scripture reminds us in Matthew 5:16 to “let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

So as you go through your day, remember that you are not only called to tell others about Jesus but also to show His love through how you live. Your example can draw someone closer to Him, one act of faithfulness and one fish at a time.
