The Compassion of the Father

Daily Devotional
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.
A father and his young son running hand-in-hand over the sand, symbolizing the embrace of compassion and love, reflecting the parable of the prodigal son.
A powerful reminder of the father’s unshakable love, running to embrace his son with compassion, just as our Heavenly Father welcomes us back with open arms.

Today's Scripture

Luke 15:20 (KJV)
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Reflection

This is truly a touching parable. There’s so much to take away from it, but what stood out to me today is this particular verse. Most of us are familiar with the story. A young man, full of selfishness, leaves his father’s house, squanders his inheritance in reckless living, and finds himself in a place of desperation. In his brokenness, he decides to return home, hoping for mercy.

I can see myself in so much of this parable. Maybe that’s why it’s so heart-gripping for me. But what touches me the most is the compassion of the father. When the son returned, the father could have rightly done many things. He could have scolded him, given him a lecture, or even refused him altogether. The son had disrespected him, after all, and wasted everything.

Yet the father did none of those things. He saw his son from a long distance, and his heart was filled with compassion. He ran to him, embraced him, and kissed him. Can you imagine what that must have felt like for the son? To be met with such love after everything he had done? It must have overwhelmed him in a way words cannot fully express.

This parable reminds me of our Heavenly Father’s compassion for us. Even when we wander, when we fall short, when we make mistakes, He is waiting with open arms, ready to welcome us home. We may feel undeserving, but God’s love for us never changes. His compassion is constant, and His mercy is new every morning.

We are not defined by our failures, but by His love for us. Just as the father didn’t condemn his son, our Heavenly Father does not condemn us. Instead, He rejoices in our return. That’s the beauty of His grace ,  it’s always there, waiting for us, no matter how far we’ve gone.

Today's Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your endless compassion and love. Help me to remember that it is You who grows me and leads me even now as I grow. I know that I don’t deserve Your mercy, but I’m so grateful that it’s never withheld. Teach me to extend that same love and compassion to others, just as You’ve shown me. Thank You for always being ready to welcome me back, no matter how far I’ve strayed. Amen.

Before You Go

As you reflect on the parable of the prodigal son, think about the times you’ve wandered or felt unworthy of God’s love. How has His compassion impacted your life? Take a moment to thank Him for the love that never gives up on you.
