More Than Willpower

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

God's Spirit transforms us from the inside out, shaping our hearts into the likeness of Christ.

The Scripture

Ezekiel 36:27 (KJV)

“And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”

Reflection

Whenever I start something new, whether it is a hobby or a project around the house, I usually spend a little time doing some research first. I'll watch a few videos, read through instructions, or look at examples from people who have already done it. It saves time, prevents frustration, and usually leads to a much better result.

The Christian life was never meant to be lived by willpower alone.

Every now and then, though, I convince myself that I don't need any help. I'll just figure it out as I go. Sometimes it works out, but more often than not, I end up with a crooked project or spending twice as much time fixing mistakes that could have been avoided had I simply accepted the help from the beginning.

I think we sometimes approach the Christian life the same way. We decide that we are going to be more patient, more loving, or more forgiving. We tell ourselves that the next time someone says something hurtful, we won't lose our temper. The next time someone cuts us off in traffic, we won't say anything unkind. Then the opportunity comes, and perhaps we succeed. We keep the harsh words inside, remain outwardly calm, and walk away feeling as though we have won the battle.

But have we? The words may have never left our mouths, yet our thoughts were filled with anger. Our hearts may have been shouting what our lips refused to say. We managed to control our behavior, but nothing inside us had really changed.

A Work of Divine Transformation

That is why Ezekiel's words are so encouraging. God never promised to simply help us behave better. He promised something far greater. Just a verse earlier, He said He would remove the stony heart and give His people a heart of flesh. Then He makes this wonderful promise: "And I will put my spirit within you..."

Notice who is doing the work. God says, "I will." He is the One who cleanses. He is the One who gives a new heart. He is the One who places His Spirit within us. He is the One who causes us to walk in His ways. This is far more than self-improvement. It is a work of divine transformation.

"We may have tried to become better people, but no amount of determination could give us a new heart."

The Power of the Resident Spirit

Before Christ, we did not naturally desire the things of God. We followed our own ways, justified our sin, and lived according to the desires of the flesh. That is exactly what Jesus came to do. Through His death and resurrection, He made a way for us to be forgiven, cleansed, and reconciled to God.

Those who trust in Him receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, who takes up residence within every believer. He does not merely stand beside us offering advice. He works within us, changing our desires, renewing our minds, and shaping us into the image of Christ.

Evidence of Growth

Sometimes that change is so gradual that we hardly notice it. Then one day we realize we no longer think the way we once did. Sin that never bothered us now grieves us. God's Word, which once seemed unimportant, has become precious to us. We find ourselves wanting to obey Him, not because someone is forcing us, but because our hearts have been changed.

That is the beautiful work of the Holy Spirit. It is lived through the power of the One whom God has placed within us. As we surrender to Him, He faithfully continues the work He began, producing fruit that could never grow from our own strength.

God never asked you to transform your own heart.
Rest in His promise and keep walking with the One who is changing you from the inside out.

Today’s Prayer

Father, thank You for not leaving me to change myself. Thank You for giving me a new heart through Jesus Christ and placing Your Holy Spirit within me. Continue Your work in my life, changing my thoughts, my desires, and my actions so that they reflect the character of Christ. Help me to rely upon Your strength instead of my own determination, trusting that You are faithful to complete the work You have begun in me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

Perhaps today you feel discouraged because you still see areas where you need to grow. Remember that if you love Christ more today than you once did, if God's Word has become sweeter, if sin troubles you more than it once did, and if your desire is to walk in obedience, give thanks to the Lord.

Those are not simply signs that you are trying harder. They are evidence that His Spirit is faithfully transforming you from the inside out. The same God who removed your heart of stone and gave you a heart of flesh will continue conforming you to the image of His Son.
