The Weight of Influence

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

God calls His people to live faithfully in the midst of the world, reflecting His truth and His character.

The Scripture

2 Kings 13:2 (KJV)

“And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and followed the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, which made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.”

Reflection

Many of us simply go about our daily lives. We head to work, run errands, spend time with our families, and then prepare to do it all again the next day. Rarely do we stop and think about how our words, our attitudes, and our choices influence the people around us.

God has never measured truth by public opinion. He measures it by His own holy character.

The people of ancient Israel were not much different. They worked, traded in the marketplaces, raised families, and lived among their neighbors just as we do today. The difference is that our reach has grown far beyond anything they could have imagined. Through phones, television, social media, and the internet, ideas can spread across the world in moments. That influence can be used to encourage truth, but it can also persuade people to embrace what God has called sin.

One of the things that stood out to me as I read this passage was the phrase, "in the sight of the LORD." It is easy to become consumed with what everyone else thinks. We live in a world where approval often determines what people believe to be right or wrong. Yet God has never measured truth by public opinion. He measures it by His own holy character.

The Ripple Effect of Choices

King Jehoahaz continued in the sins of Jeroboam, the king who caused Israel to sin. Think about that for a moment. One man's rebellion did not remain with him. His influence spread throughout an entire nation. Generation after generation continued walking the same path because someone in authority had made compromise appear acceptable.

Do we not see the same thing today? Leaders influence nations, pastors influence congregations, parents influence children, teachers influence students, and friends influence one another. Even people we have never met shape opinions through books, videos, podcasts, and social media. Influence itself is not the problem. The question is, where is that influence leading people?

"We can slowly begin measuring truth by what feels right, what is popular, or what everyone else is doing instead of what God has already declared."

Living Before an Audience of One

Sadly, we often see people reject what God has clearly spoken. Sometimes it is because they have been deceived. Sometimes it is because compromise feels easier than obedience. Other times it is because they simply prefer what satisfies the desires of the flesh. Whatever the reason, the temptation remains the same. We can slowly begin measuring truth by what feels right, what is popular, or what everyone else is doing instead of what God has already declared.

That is why those words, "in the sight of the LORD," are so important. God saw what Jehoahaz was doing. He knew the compromises. He knew the excuses. He knew the influence his life would have upon others. Nothing was hidden from Him. The same is true for us.

Resisting the Pressure to Conform

As believers, we are called to be salt and light in a world that desperately needs both. Our lives should not blend so comfortably into the culture that no one can tell the difference. Jesus has redeemed us, given us His Holy Spirit, and called us to walk in His truth. As His Spirit works within us, He empowers us to live in a way that reflects the character of Christ rather than the values of the world.

There will always be pressure to compromise. There will always be voices telling us that God's Word is outdated or that His commands should be adjusted to fit the times. Yet the Lord has never asked His people to follow the culture. He has called us to follow Him. His truth has not changed, and neither has His desire for His people to walk in obedience.

The encouraging news is that we do not walk this path alone. The same Lord who calls us to faithfulness also strengthens us to remain faithful. Through His Spirit, He gives us wisdom, conviction, and courage to stand upon His Word with humility and love. Our hope has never rested in our own strength but in the finished work of Jesus Christ and the One who continues to transform us day by day.

Just as one leader led many into sin, one faithful believer can encourage others to walk in righteousness.
Let your greatest desire be to live in a way that is pleasing in the sight of the Lord.

Today’s Prayer

Father, thank You for opening my eyes to the influence my life has upon others. Help me to walk in a way that is pleasing in Your sight and not according to the changing opinions of this world. Guard my heart from compromise, strengthen me through Your Holy Spirit, and help my words and my actions point others to Jesus Christ. May my life be a faithful testimony of Your truth, Your grace, and Your holiness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

It is easy to wonder whether one faithful life can truly make a difference, especially when the world seems to move further away from God's truth. Yet Scripture reminds us that influence has always mattered.

As you go through this week, remember that someone is watching your life. They may notice your kindness, your integrity, your faithfulness, or your willingness to stand upon God's Word with grace. Let your greatest desire be not the approval of people, but to live in a way that is pleasing in the sight of the Lord. One day, we will stand before the One whose opinion has always mattered most, and in Christ we have the joyful hope of hearing, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
