Called to Something Greater
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture
1 Thessalonians 4:7 (KJV)
“For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.”
Reflection
As we grow up, many of us are asked the same familiar question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" As children, the answer often changes from one week to the next. One day we want to be a teacher, the next day a firefighter, a nurse, or an astronaut. Then adulthood quietly approaches, and suddenly that question no longer feels like a game.
Our greatest calling is not found in a job title or career, but in who we are becoming in Christ.
Perhaps you were like me. I never really had a clear answer. Much of my working life was shaped more by necessity than by a lifelong career plan. It was about providing, sacrificing, and doing what needed to be done. Only later did I discover work that I genuinely enjoyed and felt drawn toward.
Many people speak about finding their calling. Some discover it through a career, others through ministry, and still others through faithfully serving their families and communities. Yet as important as those callings may be, God has given every believer an even greater calling: He has called us to holiness.
That is not simply something God asks of a few mature believers. It is His calling for every person who belongs to Jesus Christ.
Reflecting His Character
Sometimes holiness is misunderstood. Some imagine it means withdrawing from the world or trying to earn God's acceptance through good behavior. Yet Scripture teaches something far more beautiful.
Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have been made clean before God. Our acceptance does not rest upon our own righteousness but upon Christ's. Because we belong to Him, we have also been called to reflect His character in the way we live. Holiness is not merely about what we avoid. It is about who we are becoming.
Paul reminds the Thessalonians that God has not called them to continue living as they once did. Before Christ, they lived as the Gentile world around them lived, following sinful desires, worshiping idols, and walking according to the values of a culture that did not know God.
Distinct from the World
Has that really changed? Our world still encourages people to follow whatever feels right, pursue whatever brings temporary satisfaction, and define truth according to personal preference. The names of the idols may be different, but the heart of the problem remains the same. A life lived apart from God always leads away from His holiness.
Believers have been called to something entirely different. Jesus described His followers as the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt influences what it touches, and light exposes the darkness. Neither fulfills its purpose by blending into its surroundings. In the same way, our lives should point people toward Christ by the way we speak, the way we love, the way we forgive, and the way we walk in obedience to God's Word.
Empowered by the Spirit
This is not something we accomplish through our own determination. God has given us His Holy Spirit, who dwells within every believer. He teaches us, convicts us, strengthens us, and produces His fruit in our lives. The same God who calls us to holiness also provides everything we need to walk in it.
As others watch our lives, what do they see? Do they simply see another person living according to the world's values, or do they see the character of Christ becoming more evident in us?
Long after careers have ended and accomplishments have faded, our calling remains.
Every ordinary day is an opportunity to reflect His holiness.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for calling me to Yourself through Jesus Christ. Thank You that my standing before You rests upon His finished work and not my own efforts. Help me to walk in the holiness You have called me to, not by my own strength, but through the power of Your Holy Spirit. May my words, my actions, and my daily life reflect the character of Christ so that others may see Him in me. In Jesus' name, amen.
Before You Go
The world spends a great deal of time asking, "What do you want to be?" God asks a different question through His Word: "Will you walk in the calling I have given you?"
Every ordinary day becomes another opportunity to reflect His holiness, to shine as His light, and to point others toward the hope that is found in Jesus alone. May those who watch your life see more than your abilities. May they see the character of Christ being lived out through you.
