Seasoned by Grace
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture
Mark 9:49-50 (KJV)
“For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.”
Reflection
Salt has many uses. It preserves food, helps bring out flavor, and even finds its way into many sweet recipes. Some people have learned to enjoy food without adding salt, but most of us know what happens when a meal is seasoned just right. What once seemed ordinary suddenly comes alive. Even something as simple as salted caramel reminds us that a little salt can make all the difference.
Just as salt quietly changes whatever it touches, a believer whose life has been seasoned by God's grace should influence those around them with peace.
That is one reason Jesus' words in Mark 9 have always intrigued me. When we read about salt in the Gospels, it often points to the influence believers should have on the world. Yet Mark records something unique. Jesus says, "For every one shall be salted with fire..." Then He immediately speaks about sacrifices being salted and concludes by telling His followers to have salt in themselves and live at peace with one another.
It is interesting to think about the process of salting something. When you season a meal, you do not simply dump the entire container over it. You carefully sprinkle the salt where it is needed. The purpose is not to overwhelm the food but to bring out what is good.
Purified and Refined
Mark 9:49 has been understood in different ways by faithful students of Scripture. Some believe the fire speaks of the Holy Spirit's purifying work. Others understand it as the refining trials believers experience. Both ideas remind us that God is actively working in the lives of His people.
As I read these verses, however, I cannot help but think about the sacrifices offered to God. Under the Old Testament law, sacrifices were seasoned with salt as part of God's covenant instructions. Salt represented faithfulness, permanence, and the enduring nature of God's covenant. It was not an afterthought. It was part of the offering itself.
A Living Offering
Perhaps that helps us understand why Jesus speaks this way. As believers, we are no longer bringing animal sacrifices before God, yet Romans 12:1 calls us to present our own lives as living sacrifices. God continues His work in us, refining our character, strengthening our faith, and shaping us into people who reflect His holiness. Whether He accomplishes that through the quiet work of His Spirit, through seasons of testing, or through both, He is preparing an offering that brings Him glory.
Then Jesus gives a practical command: "Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another."
The evidence of God's work is not merely what we know. It is seen in how we live. Just as salt quietly changes whatever it touches, a believer whose life has been seasoned by God's grace should influence those around them with faithfulness, wisdom, gentleness, and peace.
Yielded to the Process
That kind of character does not happen overnight. It is the ongoing work of God in a heart that is yielded to Him. Every circumstance, every lesson, and every act of obedience becomes another way He seasons our lives so that we more clearly reflect the character of Christ.
God continues His work in us, refining our character and strengthening our faith.
He is preparing an offering that brings Him glory.
Today’s Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your faithful work in my life. Whether You are refining me through Your Spirit or through the trials I face, help me to trust that every part of the process has a purpose. Season my heart with Your grace so that my words, my actions, and my relationships reflect the character of Christ. Help me to live at peace with others and to remain faithful to You in every season. In Jesus' name, amen.
Before You Go
The next time you reach for the salt at the dinner table, let it remind you that God is still at work in your life.
Just as salt quietly transforms what it touches, God is faithfully shaping your character day by day. His work is not random, and it is never wasted. As He seasons your life with His grace, may others experience the peace, faithfulness, and love of Christ through you.
