Grounded in the Truth

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

The Scripture

2 Timothy 3:15 (KJV)

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

Reflection

This was one of those devotionals that was difficult to keep focused on a single verse because the entire chapter works together. As I read Paul's words to Timothy, I find myself wanting to continue reading because every verse builds upon the one before it.

What stands out to me in this passage is Paul's reminder that Timothy had known the Holy Scriptures from childhood.

When I think about that, my mind naturally drifts back to my own childhood. There were certainly difficult seasons and there were plenty of ordinary days that have long since faded from memory. Yet one thing remains surprisingly clear. I remember hearing about Jesus.

Even before I was old enough for school, there were conversations about God, Scripture, and faith that found their way into my heart. At the time, I could not have explained much of what I was hearing. I certainly did not understand all of its significance. Yet those truths remained long after many other childhood memories disappeared.

Over the years, I have received education, training, and instruction in many different areas of life. Some of it was useful, some of it was necessary, and some of it was quickly forgotten. Yet nothing has shaped me, challenged me, corrected me, or changed me quite like the Word of God.

A Book Unlike Any Other

That is because Scripture is unlike any other book.

Paul reminds Timothy that the Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. The Bible does not merely inform us. It transforms us. Through its pages we discover who God is, who we are, our need for a Savior, and the hope found in Jesus Christ.

As Paul writes these words, he is also warning Timothy about difficult times. The beginning of this chapter describes a world filled with selfishness, pride, deception, and people who have a form of godliness but deny its power. It is a description that feels remarkably familiar.

"The answer to deception was not something new. It was remaining grounded in the truth he already possessed."

Remaining Grounded in Truth

Sometimes we look at the challenges facing the church today and think we are dealing with something entirely new. We see truth being distorted, Scripture being twisted, and false teachings gaining attention. Yet Timothy faced many of the same struggles. Deceivers existed in his day just as they exist in ours.

That is why Paul's instruction is so important. He does not tell Timothy to chase every new idea or respond to every false teaching. Instead, he points him back to the Scriptures.

Timothy had been taught by his mother Eunice and his grandmother Lois. They had faithfully planted God's Word in his heart, and now Paul reminds him to continue in those things he had learned. The answer to deception was not something new. It was remaining grounded in the truth he already possessed.

Our Steady Foundation

The same is true for us.

In a world filled with competing voices, God's Word remains a steady foundation. It anchors us when culture shifts, guides us when confusion rises, and protects us when error presents itself as truth. The more deeply we are rooted in Scripture, the more prepared we are to recognize what is true and what is not.

Paul goes on to say that Scripture equips the believer for every good work. God has not left us without direction. Through His Word, He teaches us, corrects us, trains us, and prepares us to live faithfully in a world that desperately needs the truth.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for the gift of Your Word. Thank You for the faithful people who shared Your truth with me and helped point me to Christ. Help me to remain grounded in Scripture and not be carried away by the changing opinions of the world. Give me wisdom to recognize truth, courage to stand upon it, and a heart that continually desires to know You more. Use Your Word to teach me, shape me, and equip me for every good work You have prepared for me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

Timothy's world was not so different from ours. He lived among people who distorted the truth, promoted false teaching, and sought to lead others astray. Yet Paul's solution was remarkably simple: continue in the Scriptures.

The same encouragement applies today. We do not need a new truth, a new gospel, or a new foundation. We need to remain firmly rooted in the Word God has already given us.

As you go through today, thank God for those who first shared His truth with you. Whether it was a parent, grandparent, pastor, teacher, or friend, their faithfulness may have planted seeds that continue to bear fruit even now. Then open God's Word for yourself and continue growing in the wisdom that leads to Christ. The same Scriptures that guided Timothy are still able to guide us today.
