More Than a List of Names

Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

Behind every name in Romans 16 was a believer faithfully serving Christ and strengthening His church.

The Scripture

Romans 16:1-16 (KJV)

“I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea:..”

Reflection

For many years, this section of Romans was one of those passages I hurried through. If I am being honest, it seemed like a long list of names that had little relevance to my life. I would read a few verses, recognize that Paul was greeting people, and quickly move on to what I thought were the more important parts of Scripture.

Looking back, I think I missed something beautiful.

Now when I read Romans 16:1-16, I no longer see a collection of names. I see the people of Christ. I see men and women who loved the Lord, served His church, and faithfully carried out the work He had given them to do. Behind every name is a story. Behind every greeting is a life that was touched and transformed by the gospel.

Faithfulness Over Visibility

As Paul writes, you can almost feel the affection he has for these believers. He speaks of fellow laborers, beloved brethren, faithful servants, and those who worked hard in the Lord. Some opened their homes to the church. Some risked their lives for the sake of Christ. Others labored quietly behind the scenes.

What strikes me most is that Paul is not celebrating influence, wealth, or status. He is rejoicing over faithfulness. These believers were not being remembered for extraordinary achievements; they were being remembered for their love for Christ and His people. They were the kind of people who strengthened the church rather than weakened it.

We live in a time when visibility is often valued more than faithfulness. It is easy to assume that only the most well-known people are making an impact for the kingdom of God. Yet Romans 16 reminds us that the church is built by ordinary believers who consistently love Christ and serve His people.

"The church is not held together by famous names, but by faithful ones."

A Study in Contrasts

As I continued reading, I noticed something else. Immediately after these warm greetings, Paul gives a warning in verse 17 about those who cause divisions and offenses contrary to the doctrine that had been taught. The contrast could not be clearer.

In verses 1 through 16, we see believers who are building up the body of Christ. They are encouraging one another and walking in the truth. Then Paul turns our attention to those who disrupt the unity of the church. One group brings joy to Paul's heart because they are following Christ; the other receives a warning because they are leading people away.

Choosing Our Influence

That contrast still exists today. There are believers who quietly strengthen the church through prayer, service, and steadfastness. There are also those who create confusion and draw attention to themselves rather than to Christ.

Romans 16 reminds us which example we should follow.
God delights in believers who love Him, love one another, and remain faithful to the truth.

Today’s Prayer

Lord, thank You for the faithful believers You have placed in my life. Thank You for those who serve, encourage, pray, and labor for the sake of Your kingdom. Help me to be someone who strengthens the body of Christ rather than weakens it. Teach me to walk in truth, love, humility, and faithfulness. May my life bring glory to You and encourage others to follow You more closely. In Jesus' name, amen.

Before You Go

The next time you come across a passage filled with names, resist the temptation to rush past it. Those names represent real people who loved Jesus and remained faithful in their generation. God saw their labor and preserved their names in Scripture for us to read today.

It is also worth noticing what follows these greetings. Paul celebrates believers who are walking faithfully, but he immediately warns against those who cause divisions. The contrast teaches us that not everyone who claims to follow Christ is helping His church. Some build up, while others tear down.

As you go through today, consider what kind of influence your life has on those around you. May we be known as people who encourage fellow believers, walk in truth, and contribute to the unity of Christ's church. Like the believers Paul commended, may our lives be marked by faithfulness that points others to the Savior we love.
