Rich Toward God: What Truly Matters in Life

What we have is not the issue. What we treasure is.

Today's Scripture

Luke 12:20–21 (KJV)
But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?
So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

Reflection

I do not have a lot, but there are a few things that I own that I really enjoy. Something as simple as my favorite morning mug or my sewing machine. I remember when my favorite mug broke, and I had to replace it with a new one.

It was not a necessity, but it mattered to me.

And when you really think about it, a lot of what we have falls into that category. Our phones, gadgets, jewelry. None of these things are wrong to have. They serve a place in our lives. But sometimes, they can begin to take up more room than they should. They can slowly be given more attention, more value, and even more honor than they deserve.

We work for what we need, and that is part of life. But sometimes we find ourselves laboring far beyond what is necessary, not just for our needs, but for things that will eventually break, wear out, or no longer be ours one day.
When I read this passage, it really becomes a heart check.

Where do my desires truly lie?

Jesus tells this story to show us something deeper. It is not about having possessions. It is about what we treasure. A person can have very little and still hold tightly to it. Another can have much and yet hold it loosely. The issue is not the amount. It is the place it holds in our hearts.

There are many people who have plenty, yet their relationship with God is lacking. Not because having things is wrong, but because those things have taken the place that belongs to Him.

To be “rich toward God” means that He is what we value most. That our hearts are set on Him, not on what we can gain, keep, or build for ourselves. Because at the end of it all, those things do not go with us.

But our relationship with Him does.

So the question is not, “Do I have things?” The real question is, “Do my things have me?”

Today's Prayer

Lord, I praise You for being everything I truly need. You are faithful, constant, and far greater than anything this world can offer.

Thank You for the things You have allowed me to have, but help me to keep them in their proper place. Guard my heart from holding too tightly to what will not last.
Search me and show me where my desires may be misplaced. Teach me to value what matters most and to be rich toward You in how I live, think, and choose.

Help me to hold things loosely and to hold on to You fully.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Before You Go

Take a moment to think about what takes up the most space in your heart. Not just what you have, but what you think about, what you protect, and what you do not want to lose.

Jesus was not warning about having things. He was pointing to something deeper. What we treasure reveals where our heart truly is. Being rich toward God means He is not pushed to the side while everything else takes center place. It means He is first.

So as you go through your day, keep this in mind.

What matters most is not what you are building here, but what you are building with Him.
