True power over sin is not found in ourselves, but in what Christ has already done

Today's Scripture

Romans 6:6 (KJV)
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”

Reflection

There is an old gospel song that many have heard and sung called Power in the Blood. It is a song I love to sing, especially when I need a little encouragement, when I feel a little weak.

I am going to make another confession. I like to figure things out on my own. I like to do it all myself, even when the task seems too big. And even when I could use help, I will not budge. What usually happens is I end up tired and more frazzled than if I had just accepted the help that was there.

And if I am honest, I do the same thing spiritually. I try to fix my own shortcomings. I try to deal with sin in my own strength. But the truth is, I do not have any power over sin on my own.

That is why this verse is so important. Romans 6:6 reminds us that our old man is crucified with Him. That means the power of sin has already been dealt with through Christ. I am not fighting for victory on my own. The victory has already been won.

That song says there is wonderworking power, and that is exactly right. But it is not my power. It is His. When I stop trying to do everything myself and lean on what Christ has already done, I am no longer carrying something I was never meant to carry.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I thank You that I do not have to rely on my own strength. You have already done what I could never do. Help me to stop striving and trying to fix everything on my own. Teach me to lean on Your power and not mine. Remind me daily that through Christ, sin does not have dominion over me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

If you find yourself worn out from trying to handle everything on your own, take a moment and think about what you are really carrying. This is not about managing your schedule, your home, or your responsibilities. This is about the weight of trying to deal with sin in your own strength.

So many of us quietly try to fix ourselves. We see what is wrong, what needs to change, and we put all our effort into trying to do better, be better, and overcome on our own. But that is a burden we were never meant to carry.

Romans 6:6 reminds us that our old man is crucified with Christ. That means the power of sin has already been dealt with. You are not called to defeat sin by your own strength. You are called to live in what Christ has already done.

When you try to take that on yourself, you will end up tired every time. But when you rest in Him, when you trust in His finished work, there is freedom there.

So today, do not just try harder. Trust deeper.

And if this encouraged you, share it with someone who may be carrying that same weight, trying to fight a battle that Christ has already won.
