What Truly Makes Us Unclean
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.

Today's Scripture
Mark 7:15 (KJV)
“There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.”
Reflection
It is the time of year when people are getting their gardens ready. Soil is being turned over, beds are being prepared, and seeds are being planted. A couple of years ago I tried my hand at gardening myself. It was container gardening, which I really enjoyed. But by the time I finished filling the containers, there was soil everywhere. It was on my hands, on my clothes, and somehow even in my hair.
As a child you may not mind getting a little dirty. As an adult, I admit I do not enjoy that feeling very much. The first thing I think about is how easily that dirt will transfer everywhere else. I start looking around wondering what I might touch and spread the mess onto.
There is something about feeling dirty that makes you want to wash up quickly and feel fresh again.
Of course, the kind of dirt that comes from soil does not impact us spiritually. It may be messy, but it washes away easily. Yet there are other kinds of uncleanness that do not come from the ground.
In the time of Moses, the law included many instructions about what was considered clean and unclean. Certain foods, actions, and ceremonial practices were meant to teach the people about holiness and separation.
When Jesus spoke in Mark 7, He addressed a situation where the Pharisees were focused heavily on outward cleanliness, especially ritual handwashing and traditions surrounding food. But Jesus pointed their attention somewhere deeper.
He said that what truly defiles a person does not come from outside of them. It comes from within.
The problem is not dirt on our hands. The problem is the condition of the heart.
Some sins are obvious when we see them. If someone commits adultery, murder, or acts in open wickedness, the results are visible. But there are also sins that grow quietly inside the heart long before they are seen on the outside.
Pride. Envy. Deceit. Bitterness.
The Pharisees were very careful about what appeared outwardly clean, yet their hearts were full of things that truly defile a person.
Jesus continued explaining this truth further in Mark 7:1–23, showing that evil thoughts, pride, and deceit come from within the heart. That is the place where true uncleanness begins.
It is easy to worry about what appears on the outside, but the Lord is always concerned with what is happening inside us.
Today's Prayer
Lord, help me not to focus only on outward appearances. Search my heart and reveal anything within me that does not honor You. Cleanse my thoughts, my words, and my motives so that what comes from my life reflects Your truth and goodness. In Jesus Name, Amen
Before You Go
It is natural to notice the outward things first. We see actions, words, and behaviors long before we understand what is happening in someone’s heart.
But Jesus reminds us that the real work begins within.
Ask the Lord today to keep your heart soft and attentive to Him. When our hearts are right before God, the things that come from our lives will begin to reflect that change.
And if you have a moment, take time to read the whole passage in Mark 7:1–23. It gives deeper insight into what Jesus meant when He spoke about what truly defiles a person.
The Heart God Sees
In Mark 7:12, Jesus confronted the religious leaders who had created traditions that allowed people to avoid honoring God’s commands. Their outward religion looked respectable, but their hearts were far from true obedience. This passage reminds us that God is not impressed by appearances or man-made rules that replace His Word. What matters to Him is a heart that is sincere, obedient, and truly transformed.
What God Has Cleansed
This devotional reflects on the truth that when God cleanses something, it should no longer be called unclean, reminding us of the transforming power of His grace.
The Heart Over the Appearance
