Let Your Merciful Kindness Be My Comfort

Daily Devotional
Be encouraged by today’s Scripture reflection and prayer.
A mother, father, and children sitting close together on a couch, smiling and enjoying time together, representing love, belonging, and being part of a family
A picture of belonging, reminding us of the love that calls us children of God.

Today's Scripture

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
— 1 John 3:1 (KJV)

Reflection

When I was a child, I spent a lot of time with a friend and their family. Probably more time than I spent in my own home. One day, while we were out, my friend’s parent introduced me as if I were one of her own children. That moment stayed with me. I felt seen, embraced, and loved. I belonged, not because of anything I had done, but because I was welcomed into their family.

That picture helps me understand this verse in a deeper way. God does not simply tolerate us or keep us at a distance. He calls us His children. Not servants. Not outsiders. His children. John tells us to behold this love, to really stop and consider it, because it is not ordinary love. It is a love that adopts, claims, and draws us close.

Yet the verse also reminds us of something hard. The world does not recognize us as God’s children. Just as it did not recognize Christ, it often does not understand those who belong to Him. That can feel lonely at times. We may not fit in. We may feel misunderstood or overlooked. But our identity is not determined by the world’s recognition. It is rooted in the Father’s love.

This is not a future promise only. This is who we are now. God’s love has already been bestowed. We are already called His children. And that love remains steady, even when the world does not see us the way He does.

Today's Prayer

Father, thank You for the love You have poured out on us. Thank You for calling us Your children and making us part of Your family. When the world does not recognize us or understand us, help us rest in the truth of who we are in You. Let Your love steady our hearts and remind us that we belong to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

There may be days when you feel overlooked, misunderstood, or out of place in this world. When that happens, remember that your place in God’s family was secured by Jesus. The world did not recognize Him either, yet the Father declared Him beloved. Through faith in Christ, that same love now rests on you.

Ask yourself this. When life makes you question where you belong, whose voice are you listening to? The world’s, or the Father’s? Let the love that calls you God’s child shape how you see yourself today, even when no one else seems to notice.
