Today's Scripture

Proverbs 10:11 KJV
The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life, but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

Reflection

I am an early riser most days. I love the quietness of the morning mixed with the faint toot of a faraway train and the soft tweeting of birds. But other than that, I do not want to hear much of anything. I especially do not want to hear the human kind of noise. The older I get, the more I realize how rare it is to escape words. We spend a huge part of our day communicating. We speak, we text, we comment, we whisper, we vent, we advise, we respond, and sometimes we react without even thinking.

Maybe that is why so many of the Proverbs deal with the mouth. God knows how quickly our words can build or break. This proverb is no different. When I read the mouth of the righteous is a well of life, it makes me stop. Wells were a life source. You could go a little while without shelter and even without food, but water was non negotiable. Without it, life shuts down fast.

That is the picture Scripture gives us. Our words are meant to refresh, strengthen, and restore others the way water sustains the body. And when God is shaping our hearts, the words we speak begin to reflect Him. They carry encouragement, truth, kindness, hope, and sometimes needed correction spoken in love. This is what it means to walk in righteousness. It is living in a way that follows God closely, submits to His Word, and lets His wisdom guide what comes out of our mouths.

When I look at the times my words have been careless or unfiltered, it reminds me that I need to stay close to the Lord so that what flows out of me is pleasing to Him. Just like a well has to be maintained, so does the mouth of a believer. What we pour into our hearts will eventually flow out.

Today's Prayer

Lord, help my words today to be a well of life. Guard my mouth and shape my heart so that what comes out reflects You. Let my speech be gentle, wise, steady, and filled with grace. Help me see the moments where my words can bring refreshing to someone who is dry and weary. Teach me to speak life and not harm. In Jesus name, Amen.

Before You Go

Are your words a fountain of life today? It is a good question to pause and think about, because Scripture tells us that the mouth of the righteous is meant to refresh, uplift, and steady the hearts of others. The people you interact with, even in small ways, may be carrying discouragement, confusion, fear, or weariness. Your words can be the gentle reminder they need that God sees them and has not forgotten them.

Every conversation is an opportunity to reflect the heart of Christ. A kind answer can soften a tense moment. A word of truth can redirect someone who feels lost. A simple encouragement can strengthen someone who is barely holding on. When you let the Lord shape your heart, He also shapes your speech, and what flows out becomes life giving.

So before you move on with your day, ask the Lord to help you speak with purpose and wisdom. One word spoken in grace can do more than you know. Let what flows from your mouth be refreshing, steadying, and full of His goodness. You never know who might need a drink from the well He has placed within you.
