The Perishable Things of This World

Daily Devotional

Even the best-preserved things are still temporary. Our focus should be on what lasts forever.

Today's Scripture

And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passeth away.
— 1 Corinthians 7:31

Reflection

Have you ever bought something new and wanted to preserve it in its pristine state forever? I know when I got my first new car, it was shiny, scratch-free, and looked perfect. The desire to keep it that way became a bit of a worry. I didn’t have a garage, so keeping it spotless was a challenge. And let’s not even get started on how hard it was when I had to take it to places I couldn’t control, like the doctor's office or the grocery store. You can't always protect what you want to stay perfect.
It’s funny to think about the things we often obsess over in life, trinkets, furniture, even something as simple as a sofa. I remember the old days when sofas were covered in plastic to preserve them. Sure, they stayed new-looking, but the comfort was sacrificed. And while there’s nothing wrong with taking care of our possessions, it’s important to remember that everything in this world is perishing.
We can easily get caught up in protecting and preserving the things of this world, but Paul reminds us that “the fashion of this world passeth away.” The things we cherish so much, the material possessions and fleeting comforts, are all temporary. We spend so much time fighting, worrying, and even arguing over them that we forget they’re not meant to last forever.
In the grand scheme of things, what really matters is not the state of our car, sofa, or other possessions, but the state of our hearts. Paul’s message here is a gentle reminder not to get too attached to the things that will eventually fade away. Instead, we should focus on the eternal things that will never perish. Our time and energy are better spent on building a relationship with God, caring for others, and living out the values of His Kingdom.

Today's Prayer

Father, thank You for blessing me with the things I have, but help me not to get caught up in preserving them at the expense of my relationship with You. Help me to focus on eternal things and not let the temporary things of this world take my attention away from what truly matters. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

The world around us is temporary, but God's love, His promises, and the purpose He has for us are eternal. Take a moment today to reflect on where your focus is, are you consumed with things that will eventually fade? Ask God to help you shift your attention to what truly matters, storing up treasures in heaven rather than on earth.
