The world pulls in one direction, but choosing what lasts means following the path that leads to Christ

Today's Scripture

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
— 1 John 2:15 (KJV)

Reflection

Although my natural alarm clock is set to rise early, there have been times when I’ve turned it on just to make sure I don’t miss something important. Whether it’s an early appointment or a key event, I want to be alert and ready. I’ve also used apps on my phone to remind me of tasks or to give me a heads-up about what’s coming the next day.

This scripture feels like one of those reminders to me. It is a clear and firm message to believers. Do not love the world. Not just the world itself, but the things in the world that draw our hearts away from knowing God.

The pull of the world is strong. It appeals to our physical cravings, to the desire for possessions, status, and praise. It encourages us to make much of ourselves and little of God. And slowly, almost quietly, it shifts our focus from the eternal to the temporary.

There are times when I feel that pull. The world will try to make us treasure what we can touch, see, or feel more than we treasure Christ. That is why we need reminders like this verse. Nothing in this world will last. It is all passing. Scripture even tells us that it will one day burn and be gone. So why give it your heart?

The wise choice is to cling to what lasts. And the only thing that will remain is God and His Word. A life built around loving Him, knowing Him, and doing His will is a life that stands through every season.

It does not mean we ignore the world entirely, but we must not give our affection to it. We live in this world, but we do not belong to it. The more we treasure Christ, the more clearly we see how empty everything else really is.

So let this be your reminder. Check your heart. Check your desires. Choose what will last.

Today's Prayer

Lord, help me not to love the world or the things that distract me from You. I confess that at times my eyes and heart have been drawn away by what looks good, feels good, or sounds right. But only You are lasting. Only You are worth building my life around. Give me a heart that treasures what matters most. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Before You Go

The world will always try to grab your attention, but only Christ is worth your devotion. Loving the world leads to emptiness. Loving God leads to life.

Take a moment to reflect:

  • Is there anything in your life you’ve been loving more than Christ?

  • How do you guard your heart from the distractions of the world?

  • What does it look like to choose what will last?

  • How can you encourage others to do the same?

You may live in the world, but your heart belongs to someone far greater.
