Temporary Troubles
2 Corinthians 4:17For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
There are moments in life when we find ourselves overwhelmed by difficult circumstances that seem to consume every aspect of our existence. During such times, even the smallest troubles can weigh heavily on our hearts, leaving us feeling incapable and burdened. Yet, we are reminded in 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 (NLT) that these troubles are temporary and insignificant compared to the eternal glory that awaits us. This truth offers comfort and encouragement, urging us to shift our focus from the troubles around us and fix our gaze on the eternal rewards prepared for us.
A Temporary Journey
In the midst of challenges, it is easy to forget that our earthly journey is temporary. We may become consumed by the trials and tribulations, losing sight of the bigger picture. However, by embracing the faith of those before us, like Abraham, who trusted in God's promises despite not seeing them fulfilled in their lifetimes, we can regain perspective. Hebrews 11:13 reminds us that we are strangers and pilgrims on this earth, looking forward to our eternal reward. This realization allows us to rise above the temporary struggles and find hope in the everlasting promises of God.
Shifting Our Gaze
Instead of allowing our troubles to consume us, we are called to fix our gaze on the unseen, on the eternal rewards that await us. This shift in perspective empowers us to persevere through difficult circumstances, knowing that they will not endure forever. When we focus on the eternal, we gain a renewed sense of purpose and hope, recognizing that our present troubles are but fleeting moments in the grand scheme of eternity.
Trusting in God's Promises
Central to fixing our gaze on eternal rewards is placing our unwavering trust in God and His promises. He assures us that He will never leave nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5) and that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28). As we anchor ourselves in these truths, we can find solace and strength in the midst of turmoil, knowing that our Heavenly Father is faithful and His plans for us are ultimately for our benefit.
In times of trouble, it is natural to feel overwhelmed and consumed by our circumstances. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to fix our gaze on eternal rewards. Our present troubles are small and temporary in comparison to the glorious and everlasting promises of God. Let us take comfort and find encouragement in the fact that our struggles have an expiration date, and they do not define our ultimate destiny. By trusting in God's promises, we can navigate through difficult times with renewed hope, knowing that our eternal reward far surpasses any earthly challenge we may face.
