Entering the Spotlight today is the Biblical figure Ruth. I love the Book of Ruth! It is a relatively short book limited to four chapters, which we can glean much from its narrative. Although the focus will be only on Ruth, I hope this letter will inspire you to read it for yourself or open it up again. Discover the kindness and courageousness of a woman traveling to a strange land. I am never bored reading the story and the people who live in the pages of the Book of Ruth.

The Journey

Are you ready to embark on a journey of kindness and courage? Let us introduce you to Ruth, a woman of remarkable character and unwavering loyalty.

The Book of Ruth is a riveting tale of a young woman's bravery and resilience in the face of loss and uncertainty. This short yet powerful narrative captures her inspiring journey as she leaves her home to travel with her mother-in-law to a foreign land.  Ruth's journey is a testament to her deep love and loyalty to Naomi, as she willingly chooses to leave behind everything she knows to stay by her side.

One reason why Ruth's story is so captivating is because it highlights the power of kindness and selflessness. Specifically, Ruth's choice to remain with Naomi was not motivated by any feeling of obligation or responsibility, but rather by a profound love and empathy for her mother-in-law. Her willingness to sacrifice her own comfort and security for the sake of another person is a true inspiration to us all.

But Ruth's story is not just about selflessness; it is also about courage. The journey to Naomi's homeland was no easy feat, and Ruth had no guarantees of what her future would hold. Yet, she was willing to take the risk, trusting that God would provide for her every step of the way.

As we read the Book of Ruth, we are reminded of the power of love, loyalty, and courage. We see how these qualities can transform even the most difficult of circumstances into a beautiful and inspiring story. We encourage you to take a journey with Ruth and discover the incredible woman of kindness and courage at the heart of this unforgettable story.

But Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goes, I will go: and where thou lodges, I will lodge: your people shall be my people, and your God my God: Wherever you die, I will die, and there I will be buried: the LORD do so to me, and more also if anything but death part thee and me.              Ruth 1: 16-17

Humility

In a world where independence and self-promotion reign supreme, the story of Ruth stands as a shining example of humility and selflessness. Her unwavering commitment to her family and her willingness to submit to the wisdom of her elders serve as a powerful reminder of the importance of humility in our lives.

As Ruth gathered grain in the fields of Bethlehem, she did so not out of entitlement or expectation, but rather out of a humble desire to provide for her family. Her hard work and selflessness caught the attention of Boaz, who recognized in her the qualities of a virtuous woman.

Ruth's humility extended beyond her work in the fields, as she sought the guidance of her mother-in-law Naomi and followed her wisdom. In a culture that often values independence over submission, Ruth's willingness to humble herself and seek guidance from those with more experience is a powerful lesson for us all.

But perhaps the most striking aspect of Ruth's humility is the way in which it earned her a good name and the favor of her community. Her reputation for kindness and selflessness spread throughout the city, ultimately leading to her blessed life with a secure home, a loving husband, and a child.

In a world that often prioritizes wealth and status above all else, the story of Ruth reminds us of the power of humility and the importance of cultivating a good name. May Ruth's unwavering commitment to humility, selflessness, and kindness inspire us as we endeavor to live virtuous lives and make a positive impact on the world around us.

The Fruit of Kindness

What represents the fruit of kindness in your life? How difficult is it to step away from yourself for a moment? I rarely succeed when I compare myself to Ruth. The community observed the kindness that Ruth displayed to her Naomi. When someone mentions your name, what are the qualities they associate with you?

A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, loving favor rather than silver and gold. Proverbs 22:1

A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death is better than one's birth. Ecclesiastes 7:1

And now my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requires: for all the city of my people does know that thou art a virtuous woman.  Ruth 3:11

Throughout her journey, Ruth displays a remarkable ability to step away from herself and prioritize the needs of others. Her kindness towards her mother-in-law Naomi is particularly striking, as she selflessly provides for her and offers comfort and support in times of hardship.

As a result of her kindness, Ruth earns a good name and the favor of her community. Her reputation as a virtuous woman spread throughout the city, ultimately leading to her blessed life with a secure home, a loving husband, and a child.

Reflection

The story of Ruth reminds us that a good name and a life filled with blessings are often the result of treating others with kindness and compassion. As we navigate our own lives and strive to make a positive impact on the world around us, may we be inspired by the example of Ruth and her unwavering commitment to kindness, humility, and selflessness.

In a world that often values wealth and power over kindness and compassion, the story of Ruth serves as a powerful reminder of the true meaning of success.

Let us allow the wisdom of Proverbs 22:1 and Ecclesiastes 7:1 to guide us as we reflect on our own lives and the legacy we hope to leave behind. Our focus should be on choosing a good name and loving favor over silver and gold.
