A Prayer of Gratitude During a Difficult Season

When difficulties come, gratitude is often not our first response. Our thoughts naturally turn toward what is hurting, what has changed, and what we wish we could fix. The weight of what we are facing can make it difficult to notice the blessings that are still around us.

‧ ✻ ‧

I know this feeling well. When I am facing something difficult, the last thing I often think about is what I should be thankful for. My attention quickly goes toward the problems in front of me, the questions I cannot answer, and the circumstances I wish were different.

Sometimes hardship can become so overwhelming that we lose sight of the ways God is still providing, strengthening, and caring for us.

But God remains faithful even when life feels uncertain. He is still present, still working, and still worthy of our gratitude.

This prayer is for the moments when you need God to help you see His goodness, recognize His blessings, and find gratitude even while walking through something difficult.

Wherever you find yourself today, take a slow breath, quiet your heart before the Lord, and pray these words with confidence that He hears you. Take a moment, and let's pray together.

A Prayer of Gratitude During a Difficult Season

Heavenly Father,

You are holy, awesome, and mighty. You are the Creator of all things, and nothing is outside of Your hands. That includes my life, my circumstances, my struggles, and every concern that weighs on my heart.

Lord, no matter what I am facing, You are with me. You have never left me, and You never will. I am reminded of Your great love through Your Word, that nothing can separate me from You. No trouble, no hardship, no difficulty, and no circumstance can take me away from the love I have in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Father, I confess that there are times when my circumstances become so heavy that I lose sight of just how good You are. The difficulties in front of me can consume my thoughts. I focus so much on what is wrong, what I cannot change, and what I am waiting for You to do that I forget to pause and remember all the ways You have already been faithful.

Forgive me for the moments when my worries become louder than my gratitude. Help me to lift my eyes beyond my circumstances and see the blessings that are still present because of You.

Lord, teach me to have a thankful heart even while I am walking through something difficult. Help me remember that gratitude does not mean my struggles are not real. It means I recognize that my struggles are not greater than Your goodness.

Thank You for Your love that never changes. Thank You for Your presence when I feel weak. Thank You for the strength You give me each day, the grace that sustains me, and the promises that remind me I am never alone.

Help me notice Your hand at work, even in the small things I often overlook. Remind me of the prayers You have answered, the times You have carried me, and the ways You have provided for me before.

Father, when my heart becomes discouraged, turn my attention back to You. Let my gratitude flow not from perfect circumstances, but from the confidence that You are faithful in all things.

Thank You for being my refuge, my hope, and my unchanging God.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

Bible Verses for Gratitude During Difficult Times

Romans 8:38-39 (KJV)

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."

When difficulties come, it can feel as though we are alone or forgotten. But God’s love is not dependent on our circumstances. Nothing we face can separate us from His presence, His care, or His faithfulness.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 (KJV)

"Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation."

Habakkuk gives us a picture of gratitude that does not depend on everything going well. Even when circumstances were difficult and uncertain, he chose to remember that God Himself was still worthy of praise.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (KJV)

"In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

God does not ask us to be thankful because every situation is good. He invites us to give thanks in every situation because He is still good. Gratitude turns our hearts toward God even when life is difficult.

Psalm 34:1 (KJV)

"I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth."

David reminds us that praise is not reserved only for easy days. We can choose to honor God in every circumstance because His character never changes.

Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

God invites us to bring our worries, fears, and struggles to Him through prayer. Notice that Paul connects our requests with thanksgiving. Even while we are asking God for help, we can remember His goodness and trust His care. Gratitude does not remove the need for prayer; it changes the way we come before Him.

Cultivating a Heart of Gratitude

When we are walking through something difficult, gratitude may not be our first response. Our minds naturally turn toward what is painful, what is uncertain, and what we wish would change.

I know this is something I have to be intentional about. When I am facing a difficult situation, it is easy for my attention to become consumed by the struggle in front of me. I can focus so much on what I need God to change that I forget to pause and thank Him for who He is and the ways He has already been faithful.

Beginning with thanksgiving:
I often have concerns and cares that I need to bring before God, but before I ask Him for help, I make it a point to remember His goodness, His love, and His faithfulness first.

Choosing worship:
This has been such a meaningful reminder for me during difficult times. Choosing praise and worship songs that focus on God’s character and promises helps me redirect my heart when my circumstances start to take over my thoughts.

Remembering God’s faithfulness:
Gratitude does not mean we ignore the difficulties we face. It means we choose to remember that God is still good, still present, and still working, even when we cannot see the full picture.

Cultivating a thankful heart takes time and intention. It grows as we continually turn our hearts back toward God and recognize the many ways He cares for us.
