Pour Out Your Heart

Reflection

One of the greatest blessings God has given His people is the church. We were never meant to walk through the Christian life alone. The Lord has surrounded us with brothers and sisters in Christ who pray with us, encourage us, strengthen us through His Word, and remind us of His faithfulness when our own hearts begin to grow weary.

Even the most loving Christian friend cannot take the place of God.

What a wonderful gift that is.

Yet, as wonderful as Christian fellowship is, we are still human. There are times when a conversation that begins with a sincere request for prayer slowly turns into a long session of rehearsing every frustration, every disappointment, and every fear. Before we realize it, we have spent far more time talking about our problems than talking to the One who has invited us to bring those very burdens to Him.

I know because I have been there.

I remember walking away from one of those conversations and realizing that I had leaned more heavily upon people for comfort than I had upon the Lord. There is certainly nothing wrong with asking fellow believers to pray for us or sharing our struggles with trusted friends. In fact, Scripture encourages us to bear one another's burdens. But even the most loving Christian friend cannot take the place of God. People are limited. The Lord is not.

David understood that truth when he wrote: "Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us."

An Unedited Invitation

What an invitation. God does not tell us to hide our fears or pretend everything is fine. He doesn't ask us to carefully edit our prayers before bringing them to Him. He invites us to pour out our hearts. Every sorrow, every disappointment, every unanswered question, every anxious thought may be laid before the One who already knows them completely.

Our Constant Refuge

He is our refuge.

Because of Jesus Christ, we have confidence to come boldly before our Heavenly Father. Through Christ, we are welcomed into His presence, not as strangers, but as beloved children. The One who saved us also sustains us, comforts us, and faithfully carries every burden we place into His hands.

What peace that brings.

Our conversations with other believers are meant to lead us closer to Christ, not replace our dependence upon Him. The encouragement we receive from God's people is a precious gift, but it should always point us back to the God who alone is our refuge.

Before You Go

Perhaps today your heart feels heavy with burdens you have been carrying for far too long. Before you make another phone call or send another message, spend time with the One who has been waiting to hear from you all along.

Pour out your heart before the Lord. Tell Him everything. Then rest in the confidence that your refuge is not found in human strength or understanding, but in the faithful God who loves you, hears you, and holds you securely through Jesus Christ.
