True love begins when we choose to love like Jesus—even when it’s hard.

Today's Scripture

John 13:34–35 (NLT)
“So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”

Reflection

Love is an overwhelming theme in the Bible—and I can see why. People define love in so many different ways: feelings, loyalty, kindness, tolerance. But as believers, we are not called to define love for ourselves. We're commanded to love like Jesus.

That phrase—"love like Jesus"—can sound simple on paper but feel impossible in real life. Why? Because the love Jesus demonstrated was sacrificial, patient, and forgiving. He washed the feet of His betrayer. He wept with those in pain. He gave His life for people who mocked Him.

When it’s hard to love someone—whether it's because they’ve hurt us, offended us, or just seem unlovable—it's tempting to make our own rules. We may distance ourselves emotionally, justify bitterness, or show kindness only when it’s convenient. But Jesus doesn’t give us that option. He calls us to a higher standard—a love that reflects His heart, not the world’s expectations.

Real love doesn’t always come naturally. It comes through surrender. We ask the Holy Spirit to help us forgive, to soften our hearts, and to love without limits. When we choose to love like Jesus, even in the hard moments, we shine His light more clearly than words ever could.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I confess that sometimes it’s hard to love the way You love. Help me to remember that You loved me when I was at my worst. Fill my heart with Your compassion and patience. When I’m tempted to respond with anger or indifference, remind me of the cross. Teach me to love like Jesus, especially when it’s hard. In Your name, Jesus, Amen.

Before You Go

Take a moment today to think about someone who is difficult for you to love. Ask God to show you one small way you can reflect His love to that person—whether it’s through a prayer, a kind word, or a simple act of grace. Remember, loving like Jesus isn’t always easy, but it’s always powerful.
